O/O with authority and insurance

I am interested in other views from expediters about the differences in leasing on with a company (I have never done) or doing it the hard way. I currently have my own authority and insurance and my own customers and an occaisional broker. Has anyone out there done it both ways and could spare some wisdom? I have been expediting Cargo Van and now Truck with 24' gooseneck flatbed for a little over 10 years and don't know if I've done it the right way or not.

I think you should repost this question in the General Expedite forum. The Loading Dock forum deals with other issues then trucking.

Welcome to the site. I moved your topic to this forum. I like you do my own thing. I have found that business has picked up a great deal in my parts. Maybe you are using the wrong type of truck. The flatbed being pulled by a pick up truck isn't dock high, and I know more than not shippers (or the workers in the shipping area) want things to be at dock level so they can get it on or off the truck, right now. I run all vans and I always run into that problem when going to a new shipper.

I have in the past worked for some carriers and didn't like the idea of giving them more than half the money just because they found me a load. I don't think I could ever go back to working for one. BUT don’t EVER say NEVER, Right!!!

I do know if you work or lease on with another carrier you would have to get a different truck. No carriers I know will hire the type of set up you now have. Did you ever consider getting into a (D) unit and still do your own thing?

Teacel Thanks for the reply and the info. I think I have considered every possible truck for every situation I have been in and this still works out fairly well for me. I have two contractors that run D-units from time to time for me. I usually give them about two to three loads a week. My two best customers really like my set-up and it has its advantages. For instance, I deliver a lot of overhead cranes and most of them are 28' to 36', I can run the excess footage over my tongue as long as I don't go past the pivot point and I can hang over up to 4' on the back. I think the gooseneck is more versatile than the straight truck for me. My main question is about leasing on with a company. Have you ever done that? What part of the country are you in? How long have you been in this business? Enough said, gotta run, have a god day.
