Now THAT'S an engine!

I picked up a magazine today called Diesel Power. It's got a table in it that lists every diesel engine made by every maker. One that caught my eye is a Cat engine that's 69 liters. It's a V-16 engine and that's approximately 4,200 cubic inches. It makes something like 2200hp at 1200 rpm. It weighs 14,800 pounds. I'm not quite sure how I can get by without being too heavy on the steers with it though.

DieselPower is a great magazine to read if you want to better unserstand the powerplant in the truck you drive. It's mostly about performance pickups, but there are still many articles about the basics of diesels. There was ne about a MAN diesel ship engine recently. Pistons that were 6 feet in diameter!!! I used to buy quite a few parts from that magazine. I can't bear to read it now though, as I had to sell my beloved F-350 Powerstroke to buy this KW.

That's why we have Dave here. He knows all the answers. Build a rear engine truck with side loading center mounted cargo bay. DUH, I should have figured it out. Time to call in the KW engineers and challenge them.

I can just hear Mick Dundee telling Cat "That's not an engine, THIS is an engine." and pointing to the ship's engine.

I saw the TV program(think it was discovery) on the container ship diesel. I think it got about 3/4 of on inch per gallon. You could easily stand inside one of the cylinders.Just like locomative engines they can disconnect one cylinder, piston etc for repair while the rest keeps going.

Back in the early 80's I was an Asst Rig Mechanic on an offshore semi-submersible drilling rig. The engine room was fitted with 5 EMD 16 cylinder diesel engines. Each cylinder was 645CID (9.1" bore X 10" stroke), rated at 3000HP @ 900RPM.

I used to love standing between a pair of them when the drill crew was tripping pipe out of the hole from 12-15,000' deep...feeling, I mean REALLY feeling, 6000HP at full power would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up!!!!!!!!!!!

We would use a hand held mechanical tach for the oil rig units. The very effective governors for the EMDs were made by the Woodward Co. of Colorado. They dislike being over revved.....very large reciprocating components like to have their limits respected!!!

I just delivered a CAM SHAFT, for a Locomotive.

18 feet long 16 cyl, almost two feet in diamater highly polished, 4000lbs. Except for a tug boat or super Air Craft Carrier this is about as much H.P. I have ever seen. I even picked up a Cat for a 100ft cruiser two weeks ago 4,000 h.p. converted to a ships h.p. its weight was 9,000 lbs.

Doc would have been proud of me I was under on both axles, on the first try.
