Need better understanding of commercial vehicle insurance and how it works. Any insurance better than others. Do I need commercial insurance or just personal on the van. Need help soon to make purchase and get started.

Try checking with your current insurance carrier and see what products they have available for you after you explain your desired line of work.

Talk to one or more of those employers that you mentioned. They should have policies in place that cover the cargo you'll be toting and the van while you are toting their stuff. They may also have a group plan that offers bobtail insurance; that's for when you're empty

Make sure you understand the distinction between employee and independant contractor or owner/operator. If you can afford the time and travel to the Cleveland area on the 19th of this month you could learn alot from the speakers and attendees at the Expeditersonline FREE workshop. See this link:

Try checking with Commercial Insurance Solutions. There a good company to work with. They have a ad on this site.

I know of several companies doing local here that have drivers who have only personal insurance on their vans. The rules state that you are supposed to have commercial insurance as you are operating as a commercial carrier vehicle. I know many personal policies state in the fine print that the policy is null and void if the vehicle is being used for commercial purposes. These guys in my opinion are taking a risk and it just may cost them when they have an accident with a load on. Also many of these guys don't have General Liability or Cargo Insc.
I know that it costs more to have the proper insurance but it is a write off as a business expense, as is loss of income insc and disability.
Around here many local delivery companies don't even bother to check the insc status of the o/o vans as it is the o/o responsibility to be operating properly.
