Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan says there will be no new taxes in Thursday’s budget.

There will be nothing in the budget about asset sales either, he said, even though the government says it’s looking at all options to help pay down an unprecedented $25-billion deficit.

“There are no new taxes,” Duncan said Monday. “And again, beyond that, I can’t talk a lot about what’s in the budget on Thursday.”

The governing Liberals haven’t ruled out the possible sale of assets such as the Liquor Control Board of Ontario or the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.

But they are looking at options that range from privatization of Crown corporations to bundling several assets into a corporation and selling off shares.

That review hasn’t been completed yet, Duncan said.

Thursday’s budget is also expected to provide a road map for the government to rebalance the books, which will be awash in red ink for at least five years.

The ECOFEE being charged by a lot of stores (for oil, cleaners and other non-eco friendly products) has been removed as there were too many complaints. The list of things they charged this fee on was extensive. We already pay fees for recycling all kinds of things so this was considered a duplicate tax.
Now the provincial govt will net an extra couple of hundred million dollars in the hst things as we now pay the provincial 8% on top of the price per litre. So really they do not need the extra bucks from more taxes.

Rob...Canada is in a lot better shape, then this country...

I always qualified for the Ontario Tax reduction...always received a good 1/4erly GST rebate...so all things considered...it wasn't that bad...

While the tax rebates will increase with HST over the GST ones due to the increase, we are still going to pay more. For example accountants fees, lawyers and other such things that were not taxed before are now under the tax. So the accounting fees just lept another 8% and yes these are reclaimable the tax increase on energy for the house and other items previously exempt will cost more for the average Ont and BC based operators. While claiming the tax back is one good point on business expenses you also have to remember we have to pay it out before we get it back. That means an immediate out of pocket expense and as mentioned home costs will increase with no reclaim for those expenses. On top of the tax increase we also had leaps of 8% and more to most housing related utilities (water, heating, electricity etc). Even funeral costs have gone up due to this tax (not a business expense).

It isn't just the tax many are complaining about as it was combined with other increases making a whopping 10-25% increase in some bills. Water bills in city of Toronto went up 9% plus the tax (so 17% hit).

The tax is the most visible of the increases and therefore receives the most open complaints. Now electricity for many is going up with this hours of use billing. So day time use leaps from 5.3¢/kwh to 9.3¢/kwh and evening to 8¢/kwh with only 2100hrs to 0700hrs being cheap. That means doing laundry and other high energy ops being done late at night (means back to college days of all nighters).
