Some might not remember that it was back in the early 90's when there was a coup there, and 2 or 3 years later under Bill Clinton the US military went in and restored Aristide back in power. And when there was another coup in 2004 (I think) it was a US military jet that scooted him out of the country. The memories of US military intervention are fresh in the minds of the Hatians, which might explain their reluctance to have the US Flag being flown in a "This is ours!" fashion.
The current Haitian government is in place and backed by UN with a UN peacekeeping force (one of my favorite oxymorons). So, the country, in every sense that matters, belongs to the UN. It's their country, it's their show.
Just so you know, bodies are still being hauled off in dump trucks. Not as many as before, but several trucks per day. Initially and in the week or two after the quake, 130,000 people died. Now it's more than twice that, as people continue to die in staggering numbers. Existing infrastructure was utterly destroyed with very few buildings surviving habitability. The entire country, which is the poorest country in the Americas, will have to be rebuilt from the ground up. And it's about the same size as Maryland.
