Nissan NV Cargo Van

No, that is wrong. The Nissan has 10' of space in the current configuration. There is supposedly a new version coming soon with 20" more space. That's still on the short side but at least some improvement. If nothing else it gives 20" more "home" to the operator.

I just can't imagine why Nissan made a van that is an obvious attempt at the Sprinter market, but decided to pretty much leave out a major sector. Expeditors. Without 36"+ of dedicated bunk space, plus two skid spots, seems like a fail to me. Just my $.02.

Yes, the base model gives the 102" minimum required by FX and others for 2 skids with about 16" left over for driver space. The extended, if they bring it out as they claim, will give 2 skid spots plus 36" for the driver. I guess they figured expediters don't account for much and they'd just go for the plumbing/hvac/etc crowd.

I don't think expediting is a major segment at all in the grand scheme of things.
Scott nailed it! How many auto company execs and engineers know what expediting is, let alone the van segment of expediting, even though it was the needs of their industry that gave birth to our industry.

Even within the transportation industry, expedite barely rates a footnote on annual reports of companies like FedEx. At Con-Way, Con-Way Now was listed under "other", grouped with truckload and brokerage contributing a fraction of a percent revenue-wise. I have yet to see an annual report from ABF, but would assume that their acquisition of Panther doesn't do much to their revenue/profit columns.

I'm proud of what I do and when I explain expedite to others, I use Terry O'Connel's analogy of expedite being an ambulance service for critical freight. I also note that I am an owner/operator. It seems to add a little more cachet to my lowly status in the industry. It also makes me feel more important among the senators, congresspersons and other bigsnots in my social circle.

So yeah, what Scott said. Not only in the grand scheme of things, but also in the minor scheme of things, we, as expediters, especially vanners are mere micro-miniscule peons. As such, we will never appear on an auto maker's radar. Some day maybe the DOT's radar, but never on auto maker's radar.

I know this is an old thread. Well, Moot, may it was under the auto makers radar(esp. Ford) all along. The sprinter type of the cargo vans have been popular in Europe for cargo works. They must have seen the need for them in the US. That's why the sprinters are here. I think the new Ford versions are built with us in mind (expeditors). I bet you that Ford had been lurking through this EO forum over the years and found out that the expeditors been snapping up those sprinters. They finally decided to jump in, lol.

I think Ford sat back and was expecting the Sprinter bubble to burst..and it almost did...the Feds and UPS were looking elsewhere.....but lo and behold, out pops a viable Sprinter....well....now Ford, like 2 years ago decides to wait no more....

10's of 1000's yes, large trucking companies don't need large inventory of cargo vans. They have big trucks and subcontracted smaller freights to us. This would make more financial sense. Of course, I would agree that cargo van sales to the expeditors will still be in small percentage in overall cargo van sales. Though, I believed that they did the marketing research and we were on their radar.

Thanks for the links. I believed Ford's new cargo van will still be the popular choices for the expeditors. Besides the cargo carrying capacities, also because of low cost maintenaces, repairs and ease of financing.

Check this link and check the cargo van sales stats. Ford dominates. MB and NV are on the bottom. Now, unless Chevy and GM come up with something quick, they are too, will hit the bottom.

Lol, yes I for one, am lazy in fixing the van. I hope Ford can keep me that way. But for works...bring it on! :)

While "bigger is better" is good for expediters, it's also good for the customers that are the major consumers of these vehicles. With a long and tall Sprinter, Joe Plumber can easily walk between the shelves and cabinets to get what he needs, as opposed to crawling around in the piles of junk. Expediters a significant blip on auto makers radar? Not even...

Yes pretty much agreed that most of the sales will go to Joe Plumber types. Though within the Joe Plumber types, the main function of the van would still be cargo movements.

This is where the marketing research teams are good at. They know who and what businesses are moving those cargo.

It's more like blip, blip, blip...They were here on the EO and still lurking. I'm very confidence that we, the expeditors, played very powerful part in their production's decision. Even our numbers are smaller than the Joe Plumber, they still can count on our consistent paychecks...because we needed the vans.

We have been on their radar...see link, second paragraph.

I read this thread and many like it with a heavy heart.
So many are foaming at the mouth to get a cheaper to buy/ cheaper to operate 3 pallet hauler.
Yeah, lets flood market.
If not right away, once the first round of trade in hits everyone can fight over the three pallet loads cheaply.

Watch what you wish for.....
Maybe they should paint them all yellow . CAUTION Yellow.
