o/o till i die

with nextel you get a gps enabled phone that the owner can track thats why some carriers want nextel and are willing to give up the qc

I dont know how well they work.

in order for the phone to get tracked the carrier must get a court order, LOL. there are a few cases where the phone was stolen and the owners asked the phone companyto locate the phone and they saidhave the cops call us, then we will talk.

During my short time with DMW out of Nashville, Tn. they were talking about every driver having nextel phones in the near future(at that time) instead of having a QC the wife and I at first thought this would be great until we heard of the lousy service Nextel had.

We were told that Nextel was working out the bugs and that they'd be able to track us with the use of the phones gps feature and at that time we'd be required to purchase a Nextel phone regardless if we already were under a contract with verison.

We now have Cingular service and it's the best service we've had yet! and there's no more spinning around outside on the patio saying can you hear me now?

I thought about this

I understand the savings but I see a really big down side to a phone only way to communicate with the company you are leased to; there is absolutely no record of the conversation if there is a dispute or problem.

Also the other thing I find interesting is that many want to dump the Qualcomm. I use my Qualcomm (Clink for us FedEx people) to keep track of the information for that load. I check and double check everything but I don’t write down everything that I feel is not needed. If there is a discrepancy, I can go back and check the Qualcomm.

Greg, this thread has you spinning like the Nextel used to do me!!! LOL

There is a solution to a paper trail, and it’s one we use at Pitt Express. First let me say a driver working for us can hire on using any fone service they are already contracted with. We adapt to that drivers fone, that’s what hiring IC’s is all about. Although we do ask them to use or get Verizons when a contract expires to help cut all our overhead (free fone to fone service). Most of our communicating with the drivers is via text messaging, again we ask each O/O to have email-enabled service for their own protection. The ones who have email can leave a copy on the server and once they go online can save those important emails. Once a job is dispatched to the driver he receives it via TM and EM. The rest is up to them to control the paper trail.

About the tracking of a driver. We are a sm company and believe in the drivers working with us. We trust them! The PTT option is nice and saves some time when a customer calls and asks for an ETA, push to talk and wala!!! We have our answer, but for those who don’t have the PTT fones, it only adds another 10 seconds at best to find the driver. If someone is that busy or feels they are so important they can’t wait 10 seconds, lets just say I don’t do business with that type.

One last question, off topic. Why is this thread in the Newbie section? WELL 2!!! Shouldn't this be moved to the General Forum?

Hiya Tony,

W/ the company I'm now with, Nextel goes hand in hand w/ their service. I've been there a lil over 2 months now & no one's shown me HOW it works w/ em. I'm supposed to be able to do something to just let em know I've delivered w/out having to talk to anyone I guess. Still, I'd rather just talk verbally to dispatch so I don't press em to teach me.

Plus, we get a 9% discount for using Nextel & as some others have mentioned, we don't have Qualcom. It's mainly annoying to lose a call when you're calling a major company (like getting computer help) & have been on the phone w/ em for 15 minutes & ya lose the call. Then ya have to call back & start from scratch. All my friends/family are aware of my service challenges & calling them back isn't that big a deal.

The challenge w/ my cell phone is in part because it's my only phone. Right now I'm looking for a home in the Detroit Metro Airport area. When I get one, I'll have a landline (or internet) phone again. Once I get that, I'll use it for my important calls & anyone I drop on my cell phone will be someone I can just call right back.

Finally, ya have to weigh things out & kind of pick your spots. Relative to how I feel about my brand new vehicle, my cell phone problems are pretty minor. If someone was to say to me "you can pay X amount for cell phone service each month & have service like you get or you can have no cell phone" I'd have the phone.

Be well,
Danny
