>I believe everytime I shut the truck off,
>cutting the electric to the unit, it goes back to car mode.

Hmmm ... shouldn't do that - neither my SP7200 or the wife's SP2730 do. What model do you have ? Tried updating the unit software to whatever is the latest version ?

>Do not trust these things, they will take you under a 9-6 bridge when your
>12 or higher.

Not usually a problem for us - we're only 8' 6" :) We have noticed that it will not tell ya when the overhang at the Burger King is too low though. :7

>Common sense overules the ease of the computer!

Entirely true - a live being, capable of observation and judgement will always be superior to any machine .... simply because it is the thing which builds machines.

>Just do not put all your TRUST into them.

Good advice. After plotting and running to numerous stops (hundreds) we've found GPS to be incredibly handy. Having said that, they certainly aren't without their faults, limitations, and shortcomings.

>i guess will do me untill i get to a wal-mart up in ohio

Was in Tractor Supply the other day ..... most all winter wear was at least 30% off. They're trying to clear it all out before Spring.

Scope out the Muck "Chore Boot" - the come in low and high varieties and are completely waterproof and pretty warm. Normally about $60 or so.

Cheap may not be the best way to go . You get what you pay for . Watch for online sales . Bestbuy.com . Circuitcity.com . I prefer Circuit City . At either place you can shop online and they will let you know if it's available at a local store - pretty handy way to shoponline when on the road . Tractor Supply was a good recommendation . Rural King is good too . Check their websites for locations . One real good tip was carrying a bucket of sand . A handful of sand will get you off an icy patch in a parking lot . Get a 5 gallon bucket at Home Depot . I'm not recommending grabbing a bucket of sand from a Florida beach before you leave . Some state DPW yards will let you fill a bucket or if you have to go to Toys R Us and buy play sand .

Please dont take this as a slam and I'm not trying to be a smart A$$ but ya need to get a small version of the CFR49 published by the U.S. Department of Transportation and read part 40 Drug policy, think part 395 Hours of Service and part 397 HAZMAT driving.

Check my numbers they could be different depending on the edition that you get, would of been some good reading (yup its by the government and dry) on the bus ride. I know this post dont answer your question but IMHO this is information that a driver should read and be fimaliar with.

Gerry, excellent advice on reading the D.O.T. bible.

Bambam if you read this on the bus you will be prepared to ask specfic questions in orientation that may need further explaining.

You can find this book at most fuel stops or order it here . Come to think of it they will probably give you one at orientation . If you order it online they will e-mail you updates when regulations change . http://www.jjkeller.com/browse/prod...et=7833719213233093697045245717&pageseq=10000 . I just came from Sam's Club . They have some great deals on Navigation systems .

Let's see, Your going out for the first time, you don't know the differance between duty, not dvinging, on duty driving, off duty sleeping and off duty. You have not drivnen in ice & snow and you don't know what to take with you.I'm no expert , but my sugestion would beDON'T GO ANY WHERE UNTILL YOU HAVE LEARNED ENOUGH TO KEEP FROM GETTING ARRESTED!!!

Bambi: Almost sounds like a recipe for disaster. You really need to know the DOT HOS rules before you get going. Also as everyone will attest too have some type of written agreement with you and the owner spelling out what is expected from you and what you expect from the owner. This is extremly important, there is a wealth of information here on EO. Best to spend some time reviewing problems that have occurred with both drivers and owners. Be safe out there and don't hesitate to ask for help.
