New York Permits

A few years back New York began making changes to the requirements to run through that State. They put off renewal of the HUT permit/sticker. I gave up on waiting for them and never followed up because I just was not going through there. Now I do have New York included on my IRP but no HUT sticker or whatever they went to.
Does anyone know if anything else, over and above the IRP, is required to run inot that State? I have to start going in there a couple times a week starting next Tuesday.
I am operating a class 8 (50,000 DVW) staright truck.

I think they dropped the sticker but I'm not sure. Lost interest when I tore that page out of my Atlas.

I run under my own authority and I do have current UCR. I was just hoping to get answer before Monday morning as NYDOT did not get back to me Friday. I guess since I have them on my IRP and UCR I guess I will just hope they get back to me before I get there. I hope

This thread is a perfect example of the misinformation that abounds within the trucking industry in general, and the fact that it's really not as simple as some will jump up and down insisting that it is. I'm glad that you know there is something you don't know, and know that it is in your best interests to find out.

If you run under your own authority, you do in fact need to still register for NYHUT (if you are a certain weight of vehicle, which I assume you are, and if you want to be compliant, which I assume you do), even though they have done away with the stickers themselves.

Highway use tax

New York State imposes a highway use tax (HUT) on motor carriers operating certain motor vehicles on New York State public highways (excluding toll-paid portions of the New York State Thruway). The tax is based on mileage traveled on NYS public highways and is computed at a rate determined by the weight of the motor vehicle and the method that you choose to report the tax.

Vehicle registration requirements

You must obtain a certificate of registration for each vehicle subject to HUT. There are two types:

A HUT certificate of registration is required for any truck, tractor, or other self-propelled vehicle with a gross weight over 18,000 pounds. (If you elect to use the unloaded weight method to file your returns, a certificate is required for any truck with an unloaded weight over 8,000 pounds and any tractor with an unloaded weight over 4,000 pounds.)

Their website is noted below and it tells you how to register (and looks like it can be done online).

They did away with the sticker. I have my own authority & I am registered, but because my DOT number is considered inactive & used for resgistration purposes only I'm NOT required to fill out the quartly forms. However of I do activate my DOT number than I have to report again. Just go the NYS/DOT website & register.

If you are coming into NYC, LI or lower upstate no one is going to bother you about it.

They may not bother you, but you could get hit with a fine in an audit. Better to do it right the first time.
