New York City

It all starts with how tall your truck is. If your 13 feet or under you can go threw the Lincoln tunnel. If your 13.2 drop your are bags and you will be fine. All of our trucks have went threw the Lincoln tunnel for years. It will bring you out on Dyer Ave and then turn right on 42nd street. You can take 42nd st to Broadway and turn right and that will take you to 34th street. Just remember most of your odd numbers streets go west and your even number streets goes east. As you leave just go west till you hit route 9A as 34th street is a two way street. Take route 9A north to 40th street and that will put you right back to the Lincoln tunnel. I always tell people to go to google maps and look up where they are going. Have fun as I love going to New York City. :)

Ouch! If you don't like your co driver just kick them out don't try an kill them!

Ha! I hope, for you, that it is not a Like Mother, Like Son deal and that you two stay happily married forever and ever.

And yes really 17 times...thankfully she doesn't keep all the last names. Though she likes truckers and sounds like she'll be on the prowl again soon...may the gods have mercy on us all!
My fiancee teases her that he can't afford her tombstone, imagine all those last names! :p

I <3 NYC, but have never had to do it in a truck, just vans, and any of my info would certainly not be current.

Worked Int'l trade shows at the Javits Center several times over the years and have dealt with all the typical stuff most people dislike; finding parking and loading and unloading cargo, dealing with the trade unions about this or that, hiring help off the street, and navigating the taxi madness, etc.

Stayed several times at the Hotel Edison off Times Square (classic old place with a cool cafe' that has playing cards stuck to the high ceiling; an old tradition or trick deal of some sort). No idea what it is like these days, but then it was a cool, great, place from which to wander the Square area.

If you have time and have a safe place to park your wheels, doing some of the sights is well worth it. There is SO much there to see. Used to be able to stay real cheap at/near the UN too, which provides rooms/housing for travelers.

Lots of good tips in this thread for getting in and out that I would never have known about.

Good luck, Pan, hope it works out and that you have both a successful delivery and blast discovering NYC.

I'm a rare one that likes NYC ! Here's my take..Park @ Lombardi Service Plaza for an early start across GWB. Slow and steady wins the race on Manhattan ! Your usually going slow enough to spot any dangers before you get to them. Pull your mirrors in. If you like the NYC experience, you can park @ Lombardi and walk to NJ transit at the park and ride for a $2.75 bus ride to Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times SquARE.

He's already got a better track record! Lol! Plus thankfully she didn't have much input on his upbringing so he doesn't act like her or have much in common with her!

Nah, he loves vehicles. Vehicles are a cash cow for the city. When I quit going into NYC in Feb 2011, munimeters were just starting to be switched from $2.50 to $3.00 per hour. I come back in April of this year, they're $4.00!! Not only that, but is there ANYWHERE else in America that charges $115 for a run-of-the-mill parking ticket? Here in my little PA town you'd have to park at a fire hydrant then in a handicap zone to rack up $115 in tickets!

Muni meters take quarters or credit cards.

SOME munimeters take credit cards, not all!

Pandora, if I were you I'd have at least two rolls of quarters. Also, if you're in a semi and get a ticket, you'll probably get two for the same offense. NYC does that because they consider tractor and trailer to be two separate vehicles. They also will put a ticket wherever they GD well please. Favorites are in the grille, door seams, and especially hood latches. Lastly, DO. NOT. IDLE. These bums have even been known to give idling tickets for running reefers!

My Mother in law works at that Macy's in the Jewlry department.

Will she give Pandora a discount for mentioning you? :)

We're going to stop in Jersey, plan our route. After we deliver we'll probably head right back out...if we get a chance to sight see we'll do a park and ride! :)

Yes, you are correct. I think the garment center only takes credit cards or muni meter cards. My apologies.

I know they gave a ticket to the trucks in the docks of Macy's...if can't use dock without getting a ticket there's a problem! Guess we know next time if we come to Macy's include price of ticket in pay!

One should never accept a load into NYC unless the rate is MUCH higher than a normal run. Tolls need to be taken into account, the stress factor etc. There is money to be made on NYC runs, make sure you make it or don't take it.
