New rescue needed?

What is going on here? I was under the impression that all was just "hunky dory" now that Obama was in charge. Maybe they were just out of hours?

Will Obama send in the 'Seals' again?

Egypt bars son of US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, NGO colleagues from leaving

Sam LaHood, the son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and the head of the International Republican Institute's (IRI) Cairo office, was blocked from departing Egypt earlier this week. He, along with a dozen other American NGO colleagues, have been placed on an Egyptian "no-fly" list, officials with IRI told Yahoo News Thursday.

The younger LaHood was blocked at passport control when he went to the Cairo airport Saturday, Lorne Craner, the head of the IRI, a Washington-based pro-democracy non-government organization, told Yahoo News.

The organization is raising awareness of the situation now because, despite calls from several high ranking American officials to Egyptian leaders to discuss the case, the situation does not appear closer to being resolved.

President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns, and Senator John McCain (R-Arizona), the chairman of IRI, "have all been calling, they have all had very honest conversations with Egyptian leaders," Craner said. "And not only is nothing getting better, things are getting worse."

"We are all scratching our heads over here," Craner continued. "I did two tours at State and one at the NSC. If the president called someone, something gets worked out."

The White House and State Department acknowledged ongoing efforts to try to resolve the matter.

"Yes, we have raised the issue of several U.S. citizens not being allowed to depart [the country] with the Egyptian government, along with the broader issue of NGOs," an administration official told Yahoo News Thursday.

"Several US citizens have been questioned by judges in connection with the Egyptian government's investigation of NGOs and are currently restricted from leaving Egypt," a State Department official told Yahoo News Thursday. "We are working with the Government of Egypt to lift the travel restrictions and allow these individuals to come home as quickly as possible."

Last month, Egyptian police raided the Cairo offices of IRI and several other NGOs, including the U.S.-based National Democratic Institute and Freedom House, confiscating records and computers. The raids were ordered by the Egyptian prosecutors' office, which is purportedly investigating alleged foreign funding of NGOs operating in the country.

Craner said the younger LaHood's name began appearing in Egyptian newspapers a couple days after those raids--in reports that noted his familial connection to the US transportation secretary. The reports prompted Craner to start "nagging" the younger LaHood to leave the country.

Ray LaHood, a former Republican lawmaker from Illinois, is the only Arab-American member of Obama's cabinet. But Craner believed LaHood is not being targeted because of that, but because he makes a high profile "target of opportunity."

"Suddenly Sam's name turned up in newspaper in Egypt,....a few days after police show up armed" at their office, Craner said. "He was the first one on the no-fly list who happened to go out to the airport. I had been nagging him to leave."

LaHood is among the employees of the raided organizations who have been asked to come in for long interrogation sessions with the Egyptian's prosecutor office, Craner said. The employees on the no-fly list are a "subset" of those who have been questioned.

Middle East analysts note the irony of Egyptian prosecutors investigating whether the NGOs receive foreign funding, given the fact the U.S. government gives billions of dollars in military aid to Egypt. Other NGO officials suggested the problem is that the groups were not properly registered in Egypt, though IRI had been officially invited to send international monitors to observe Egypt's recent parliament elections.

"Egypt's military council accuses NGOs of foreign funding even though at least 20% of its budget - $1.3 billion - is foreign funded," noted Shadi Hamid, the director of research at the Brookings Doha Center, at the time of those raids.

But even before the latest incident, Congress had imposed several additional conditions before approving the next tranche of aid.

Hey why don't we just turn our military into a pick and delivery service for countries, or rent some of the equipment like Uhaul?

I think the idea of "rescuing" anyone should be left out of their job description, as much as humanitarian work and other things that are not in the constitution. The last time I looked, spreading democracy seems to be our number one cause for the problems that we are getting into and as the Greeks 2500 years ago seem to have proven, it is a reason for further downfall of our country.

So my solution is simple, no rescuing of people but to defend against attacks from other countries.

As far as this issue with LaHood, just maybe it is time for his daddy to take a look at what his actions bring to his family.

We need to end 100% of all non-Constitutional missions. Like hurricane relief, earthquake relief, flood relief. NONE of those things are the mission of our military.

I promise you though, IF we ever (and we won't no matter who is elected) were to use our military ONLY as intended by our Constitution that many in here, and every where else, would raise holy hell over the lack of aid from the US military.

Yeah, you guys know how to handle stuff like that. Too bad we don't, here.

Enjoyed our visit, hope to do it again sometime soon!

See layout I think you understand where I'm coming from but I feel that the rest of the world would not fall apart with us focusing on the law that is our supreme law of our country.

You know it seems that France Germany and many other countries do not approach the world police thing because they may be a bit smarter than us by using us.

I would have NO problem telling the rest of the world to "buzz off". I still contend that MOST of those who CLAIM they want to return our military to it's primary mission only say so only until something bad happens. It always does. Even as we speak the 'Bear' is waking from it's hibernation.

Well what constitutes bad?

Being attacked is bad, but germany getting attacked by Italy is not our problem.

When we do diplomacy through foriegm aid and protection with a lack of any of it being a two way exchange, we fail ourselves and what we call allies.

The next earthquake in Haiti. The next hurricane in New Orleans. The next famine in Africa. The next death camp or Gulag. The list is endless. NONE of the listed above, or a zillion things like it, are the mission of the US military. You can bet your boots to dollars that the vast majority who are screaming for a return to the Constitutional mission of the military will be screaming the loudest when we don't intervene in the next genocide.

OK I'm one who feels they are only there to defend our country, nothing more. SO in the last 60 years, when have we been directly attacked that we needed the military to defend our homeland? AND I am not talking about 9/11.

The next earthquake in Haiti.

Not our country's problem unless we want to declare war on the Earth.

The next hurricane in New Orleans.

Ever heard of the national guard?

Our military, the Army, Navy and Marines are not state run or commanded, their purpose is different than that of the national guard.

The next famine in Africa.

When have we actually had troops on the ground to stop an African Famine. I can tell you a little about that, even the UN fails and the best is the charities who sometimes (<<GASP>>) not religiously based.

The next death camp or Gulag.

Really, gulags are political reeducation centers, a lot like our public schools.

The list is endless.

Nope it isn't, it is simple, the US military is there to in effect uphold the constitution (the country) and defend it from those who want to destroy the country. Putting into terms of our founding fathers, it is there to be used as a defensive operations to protect the people and country.

NONE of the listed above, or a zillion things like it, are the mission of the US military.

Again it is there just to defend the country. nothing more.

Greg, you are missing my point. I said I have NO PROBLEM ignoring every thing that goes wrong where we used to use our military. Like civilians being killed in Libya. We had NO business there.

I am saying that the VAST majority of those screaming for a return to the true mission of our military, don't REALLY want that. They will be the first to scream and the loudest when the next "thing" happens.

Like the mess in Mexico. NONE of our business. Just seal the border and let them kill them selves. Catch someone coming across illegally? Shoot 'em like any other invader. That IS the proper us of our military. It is there solely to break things and kill people in defense of our Constitution. NOTHING MORE!

If there is a need for intervention, it is mexico.

But I understand what you are saying so look up rhetorical

Nope, not Mexico either. There is no middle ground.

Not that any of this matters. IF King Putz the 1st gets the cuts he is after, at a time when the rest of the world powers are BUILDING UP their military, we will be in a REAL shootin match fairly soon.

A PRIME example of why idiots should not be elected.

I understand where you are coming from but the case of Mexico, this is a national security/defensive issue with pretty much the government of Mexico providing assistance to those who invade our country.

Greg, this is REALLY simple. Mexico is NO match even for an Obama weakened US Army. There is NO need to fight them. Just seal the border and shoot anyone who crosses. IF Mexico wants to come across, take them out. It won't be hard. What happens inside Mexico is of no matter to us.

No need for fences, moats, etc. Just well placed troops with lots of ammunition. Heavy stuff, .50 calibers, or maybe A10's with "Vulcans" on them.

Push back those cartel dudes who have already set up shop.

The day is SOON coming that IF the Feds don't seal that border, US citizens will.

This would seal the border
