Does anyone have current or recent info on conditions in New Orleans? Last time I was there, last Oct, almost NOTHING was open yet! I will be delivering there tomorrow morning, & will try to get online before then. Thanks, Cheri:)

Hi Cherri,
I was in New Orleans last week and things are about 80% functional. I have frieds in Slidell that get to move back into their house at the end of the month. Here in Dallas we still have several Katrina rescue kitty cats we are taking care of. They get to go home the 2nd week of March.

Drive careful and avoid the fools if you can!

Jeez, what took you so long to reply? lol, I hadn't even signed off yet! Seriously, thanks Kathy, it's good to hear. When I went in Oct, I was dumbstruck by the wreckage, including the house I lived in. Some progress will be hopeful, though, I don't think it will ever be the same.(Considering the crime rate, maybe that's a good thing!) ;)

We were in Slidel a few weeks ago for a delivery. Debris still strewn everywhere. Some stores like Cracker Barell open limited hours. A number of traffic lights still dark with stop signs in their place. Folks living in and around there have a long way to go to get back to what most Americans consider a normal life. We were positively impressed by what the locals told us about Mardi Gras. They plan to go when they don't normally go. They know the world is watching and want the event to succeed.

First, the good news: there's a big sign on the Superdome, saying it will reopen 9/24/06. Now, as whatshisname used to say, for the rest of the story: as ATeam posted, places are reopening, but all the fast food places are drive-through only. The major intersections with 4 way stop signs have been taken over by businesses advertising, using signs stuck in the ground, like at election time, the areas under the overpasses are being used to store damaged vehicles, some blocks are razed & cleared to the ground, but most are untouched - save for the blue tarped roofs. (I'm glad for the blue tarps - when I went in Oct., the sight of houses with holes hacked through the roof to escape the water, hit me hard - & I'd already seen it on tv.) Lowe's is so jammed, you can't get in the parking lot!
My personal opinion is that they can rebuild it, and they will, but they can never make it what it was. The gumbo of Cajun, Creole, Spanish, & French was unique. I could live without MardiGras, as I don't like parades,(except Pete Fountain's "Half Fast Marching Krewe" lol), & I never got invited to the fancy balls, but the architecture, music, food, street entertainers - it was one of a kind. I always loved it, and I think America has lost something irreplaceable.
