Hi to all we are new here on the board. My husband has been doing a lot of research into expedite trucking. I mean he has been reading this form over three years. For health reasons he is wanting to change careers. Our kids are grown,so we really don`t have anything to keep us at home. We talked it over,we think expedit trucking is something we want to do.He wants to use a cargo van. What can of money can we expect as owner operators? He says we can do good, but I want to know what do you guys say?

I'd say: if he hasn't read the answers to that question after three years - maybe he should read more than the Loading Dock forum? :+

As a husband wife team I think you should look at driving a D truck for an owner until you are sure this is what you want to do. An D truck is easier to drive then a E unit and make very good money. That is the direction I would suggest you look into. Read the past posts on trying to get into this business in a van and that should help you.
The best job in the world if you like the life style or I have heard it can be the worst. We wish you all the luck in the world and I hope you can have as much fun as we have.

For what it's worth I would also suggest that you guys look into running a "D" unit for an owner. I have been on the road almost a year now and my wife joined me last Sept. We enjoy what we are doing but I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy I started with an owner. It has helped me to avoid alot of mistakes I might have made.

Try to find an owner who would run with your husband for a couple of months to teach him the ropes so to speak. I did and that helped alot as well.

Good luck to you both. There is money to be made. Just take you time starting and learn all you can from these posts. You can go to truck stops and talk with drivers. (don't knock on doors) Most will be happy to talk with you.

I don't run any vans so I can't give you figures on that however I am going to agree with those suggesting driving for an owner for a while to be sure you like this and want to do it as well as running a D unit which will generate more income. Good luck to you.

I would agree with the others observations. A straight unit is the most profitable. A tractor will gross more, but it carries higher operating expenses. The same school of thought generally applies to reefer type trucks as well. More gross revenue, but higher equipment and operating costs.
