I stand corrected: many carriers do not require a CDL to drive a cargo van.
However, I'd be willing to bet that the list of carriers who don't require a CDL and the list of disreputable [untrustworthy] carriers would have a great deal of overlap, and inexperienced people are their primary demographic for finding new drivers.

I think a cdl makes no difference and some companies only require it because they feel it protects them more legally.

For me it was. For example, requirements for securing the loads, using proper equipments, and positioning of the loads in the cargo area. DL would not know about these requirements. Also if the DOT pulls me over to check the loads, I'm covered. And you are right about legal part. Load can shift damaged if improperly secured....insurance and job security issues here :)

My class b test had nothing about securing loads. An intelgent person with a normal operators license usually will do much better than the knucklehead with a cdl.

May be the questions were not on the test. Though, most states CDL manual, cover cargo securements info. Xiggi, you just got lucky questions were not on your test when you took it.

So are you guys telling me a cdl causes people to strap freight in a cargo van. I don't think so.

You're right about that: getting any cert only says you knew enough to pass the test - it doesn't say you retained [or practice] any of it.
But it's something I would expect insurance companies to require, more than the carriers themselves.

Yes Xiggi :) and the one that doesn't strap would fall under your classification of "knucklehead." Lol.
