you need work, take it..learn the business and in 6 months, move on to something in the 60/40 split area...

I think the owner paying for fuel and everything, and driving for a flat rate, that 32 cents is a fair rate. There are certainly weeks and months where that's all I pay myself, and sometimes not even that. But I do try, normally, to pay myself 32 CPM, just as a way to keep track of things, as a way to separate out the Thirds.

I agree that 28 CPM isn't OMG! low, but it's sub par of the standard 60/40, regardless of which end you're on with the split. What bothers me is the "because you're inexperienced" justification, when the rate to the truck and owner will be the same whether it's a new guy or a 20 year man behind the wheel, especially when having a driver's license already is about 95% of the experience one needs to start driving an expedited van.

I'm all good with the loads all pay the same. The owner is charging the op a few cents for the learning experience.
Realistically a seasoned driver should do better for the owner by knowing where and when to go.
I'd say take it, if he can get by,pay attention and learn. Try to make owner profitable so he can afford to give him a raise at six months.
There are worse deals offered to newbies on a daily basis.

I understand that....the rate is low, but not extremely low.....I am thinking .32 -.34....and yes the owner is fluffing him with that experience story....either way I'd imagine the owner will lead him by the nose anyways...keep in mind the guy just has to do this for maybe 6 months at most anyways till some experience kicks in and he can move on IF he still likes the biz...

I only drove for an owner a van for a short period of time, got 50 cents a mile, they paid all fuel, tolls, insurance, I just drove, got paid, it was simple. no 60/40 stuff, just 50 cents a mile period.

I could afford .50....because of my carriers pay scale.....and the MPG this sprinter gets.....on the flipside....suppose this owner is one of them scumbag owners that run that .75 to 1.00 freight and the e350 gas guzzler is like 10 - 12 mpg....? hmmmm?

It has a lot to do with the miles you get if you sit for two or three days with out a load thats not enough if you get loaded every day it could work out. How many people get loaded everyday in Expedited!

There should be a rule that whenever anyone states any rate they need to say LOADED or LOADED AND EMPTY.

doesn't matter how you get to the miles..... 2 - 1,000 mile loads or 5 - 400 mile loads....

I agree with everybody that says go for it. It is low pay but consider it an apprenticeship. Even 3 months with this owner will give you "experience" that you can take elsewhere. At least you have the good sense to start at the bottom and work up! Good luck.

Take the deal..it is not the best, but it will get you the experience you need.....considering the van you'd be driving the owner can't afford much more to make a profit himself......oh yeah..when you get to Dayton Oh....you get another load...you don't come home....doh....Good luck

Turtle....look at the van.....e350 high cube....lucky to get 12 mpg....and you know what our fleet owners pay here and it seems in line....

I was thinking this when i posted my orginal replay, but I wanted to get some more facts.

My flat top e350 get's 12.4 mpg, my old 10" 6' cube van with a diesel got about 10 mpg

Is there a contract?
Any kind of pay for any over and beyond excessive dead head?....
Fuel Card.....any limits?...

Remember Do Not use your money for repairs.....the owner should be able to take care of that himself.....

Good Luck

Yup. Taking a beating right now for .20 team rate with no dead miles, no bonus miles, and break downs right and left. Do your time and move on?

Put another way....had account set up for trucking exclusive. That account is showing a loss; considering schooling, expenses on the road, hotels, and getting to the end of the year for tax write off.

Have a long range plan.

Maverick: could you elaborate on the 'break downs right & left' comment? Every truck breaks down, [this one was in the shop for 3 days the other week, getting 2 fuel injectors replaced], but a whole lot of downtime is a red flag: it's a crummy truck, or it's not maintained properly.
Also: hotels? Is that like, a regular thing? Or part of the breakdown problem? I get the impression that you drive for an owner, if so, hotels while the truck is brokedown should be his expense, not yours.
I take a break now & then for indoor plumbing & cable tv, but it's not a serious dent in the budget, so what's up with that?
