Need Florida O/O advice on Getting IRP Tag

My wife and I are making the move to O/O. We bought a 2006 Freightliner Columbia in MI, Had our signs and QC installed and drove it home to FL. We are leased to FedEx CC.
I know that I first need to get my title work done and then apply for an IRP Tag.
My questions are:
1. Is there any way to avoid paying FL sales tax?
(The MI paperwork says "Tax Exempt Rolling Stock")

2. I am filling out the paperwork for the IRP tag and it is asking for estimated mileage for each jurisdiction. I am guessing 100k miles in 50 jurisdictions so that would be 2k per. Or should I try to guess each state?

3. Is it possible to go to Tallahassee and get the IRP plate the same day? (I live 90 miles away)

Any advice on these questions would be greatly appreciated.

If it is similar to Ohio they have a sheet for first time buyers to use that give minimums for each state and providences of Canada. Use them for your first time. I don't think that I would list any miles for Hawaii. :)

You can get your Tags the same day. For first time registrants, you will need to pay by cash or certified funds. They don't accept debit or credit cards. The taxes will have to be paid. The exemption you mentioned was for the state you purchased it. Florida will charge you for the sale. On the IRP milage, the first time, you can use their default guide. BTW make sure your insurance declaration page shows a valid date, ours showed that the policy expired 24hrs after it was issued...caused a 2hr delay in getting our tags.

I thought that all 48 states exempt vehicles used in interstate commerce from any sales tax?

If that was the case, doesn't FedEx help their truck owners with Plates?

I think these questions need to be asked to FECC . The IRP is probably issued in the state the carrier is based in , not where the truck owner resides . The mileage in each jurisdiction will be nowhere close to equal . Here again FECC cn give an estimate based on average mileage in each state the past quarter or year ,

FECC really wont be able to do much as we learned. Since its the first time registering the truck in Florida and the fact that you have not registered this truck anywhere before, and being Fl O/Os ourselves, I strongly suggest that you use Florida's default miliages for the first year's IRP. The IRP is issued and paid for in the state the truck is registered in, not the carrier.

As O/Os we have used Carrier Services of Florida in Tallahassee, Fl process or truck registrations and renewals for years. In fact our recruiter at FECC suggested them. Its much more simple than doing it yourself. They do all of the forms and walk everything through for a fee of $75.00 for IRP work and $ 30.00 for title work. It is well worth the cost of letting them deal with the aggravation when dealing with Commercial DMV in Tallahasse.

Example: IRP must first be processed and paid. Time = 1-day.
Since they will not process the IRP and Title/registration on the same day, they must go back the next day after paying the IRP fee (with proof of payment) to process the registration and get your base plate. Then once you pay them for everything, they overnight the Reg/Base plate to you.

If you run everything through yourself and anything is incorrect, DMV will most likely cost you a second day of running around anyway. This service processes many FECC and other FedEx O/Os registrations in FL. Just a suggestion as it allows us to keep working while they take care of everything.

You can do same day in Tallahassee, or there are a few third party places to do it for a small fee. They do take Comchecks.

First time mileage, there is a choice of a number, or you can put an "E" for estimated mileage. CA and a few others will ultimately take some miles every year, whether you go there or not.

Thanks for the info.
I walked it through myself and got it done in about 3 hours.
The folks there were very nice and helpful. If you have everything you need its fairly easy.
