He was probably asking me .... since the Sprinter has disc brakes .. and they work just fine ... 170,000 miles and not worn at all ..... of course I don't use brakes much, I try to drive with enough clearance I can just ease off the throttle.

Smart driving. At about 102k when my van was in the shop they asked me if I'd replaced my brakes. I said no they were originals. They said the pads were so thick they thought they were a fairly new set and I must have replaced them early.

Who are you asking this quesion too?

You!

The last time I looked there are shoes on 99% of the trucks on the road while the other 1% have pads because they have disc brakes. I think the disc system is the only way to go now and having decided that they will be on the next truck, I look forward to them.

By the way, I have had several inspections, not once has there been one issue with a cracked shoe by a DOT officer while my inspector (I take it to the same place all the time) found a crack in the trailing shoe on my right rear tire after all the inspections, including the worst Ohio DOT inspection I have ever been through.

We do DOT inspections on Expedite trucks, vans, Sprinters, and tractors at our shop in Medina, Ohio.
We check over everything to make sure the unit is safe and in good working order. We also do small repairs and Oil changes even if you bring your own oil and filters. You can go to www.mayfieldexpress.com if you ever need a DOT inspection or a pm service as we know how it is to pay a lot for things on the road.

Took a fast look at your link..
Is your shop open to the public..Reason I ask is it would be good to know of some that maybe familial with straight trucks. Especially when it comes to sleeper repairs and parts.
If so care to share your shop rates?

I have brake shoes, I should have used the word lining, not pads, but every other vehicle I own has pads so it just came out that way, thanks for pointing out my errors, I beg humble forgiveness sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pulling into an ohio weigh station durning blitz week will get ya nailed without a doubt, even for a hairline crack, when the mechanic came and changed my shoe's he said "this is what they stopped you for?" it was so minimal, the cracks were hairline on the edge of the lining, not all the way into the meat.
I say they like to write tickets! Keeping a nice shiny truck sometimes helps, but not always.

I managed to get my cargo van inspection done at the TA on Hwy 70 in Oak Grove, MO (marker 28) just east of KC. It was $51.99 plus tax and took about 20 min. Thanks for all the responses!

That's the way to do it! Not only do you save on brake wear and replacement, but you also increase your mpg. I've got 580,000 miles on the original rear brake pads on my Chevy but could probably use new parking brake shoes because I sometimes forget to release the parking brake.

Yes our shop is open to all. We have worked on other Panther, FedEx and Load1 owners and drivers trucks. Our shop rate is $50.00 an hour. We do a lot with sleeper repair and electrical work in sleepers. We don't do major repairs like engine overhauls. I have the shop so why not help other expediters when we can. We have saved a great deal of money being able to work on our own trucks. We aren't trying to get rich off of offering our shop out to fellow expediters, just trying to help them save money when we can.
