Nearly 35,000 Ford workers sign grievance over pay | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

The dispute began in 2010 when Ford reinstated merit pay raises and 401(k) matches for its salaried workers, but not hourly workers. Since then, nearly 35,000 UAW members have signed grievances, according to a report on a UAW local Web site. At the end of 2010, Ford had about 40,600 U.S. hourly workers.

The union says that Ford's decision violated a provision in the current contract that requires all of Ford's stakeholders to make equal sacrifices to get Ford back on solid financial footing.

all of the hourly workers should just walk off and then see how much money the salaried workers will have then , when are the stupid greedy popele going to realise if you dont have somebody doing the work. you wont be getting paid either ,

The stupid greedy people will realize that, just about the time the other stupid greedy people realize they have it better than most right now and if they all walk off they can all be replaced in a heartbeat, either with new employees or new foreign auto makers building cars in the south for $8 to $10 less per employee.

Not even close to being treated like a slave. The working people are hired, and paid, to do a job, a job in which they played no part in and risked nothing to create.

clcooper,
don't take this wrong but the UAW worker has it too easy compared to the white collar workers who design and engineer the cars. Without those who are in the office, the ones on the line don't have a job but those on the line can be replaced.

In the past the union was needed, once the owner of the company could fire you for any reason which in a way it is right because it is his company but there is a lot more to the union movement than what is told in the stories and propaganda that they propagate, like how you got your union job after the union got into the company and how you were expected to follow the union line.

The 35,000 ford workers should feel lucky they got a job in an industry that has proven they don't need 35,000 workers to build cars but can do with less than 5000.

By the way, you know GM white collar retirees are suing GM and Met Life because their life insurance benefits were cut from the 100k-1M to 10k?

Reminds me of the age old question, "What came first, the chicken or the egg".

People tend to forget that companies are not is business to provide jobs. That is a "side" issue. They are in business to make products and money. The jobs that are developed are there only to meet that end.

It reminds me of a news segment I watched when I was in Detroit, it was about this woman that was saying she deserves over $20 an hour to put the plastic fender flares in place on the F-150, she ran no tools or did anything but stand there set it in place at a nice slow pace and stood around waiting for the next one. The great thing is the reason she deserves that pay is so she can provide a middle income lifestyle for herself and her adult daughter that does not work.

There are just far too many able bodied adults out there sucking off the dole. Far too many of those are just a waste of life.

I have worked in a Japanese run assembly plant (Toyota) in Canada. Non union, little regard to long term employee health. 4 yrs was enough for me so I willingly left.
During that time, I also went to Japan for training/brainwashing and was at an assembly plant there for 3 weeks. Union shop, but much different representation than UAW/CAW. Very tough working conditions from what I saw, but it seemed to work for them.
And then there are the plants here we've all been to. I'd like to think theres a happy medium somewhere between these but who knows.

I agree with what everyone is saying BUT, back when GM, Chrysler and every other Tom Dick and harry was bankrupting, Ford promised their workers a raise in this category. They did not do it.

I know they make entirely to much money, they're attitudes just plain suck when you get to a dock to unload. JUST GETTING TO A DOCK SOMETIMES REQUIRES AND ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT!!!

I'm just saying they were promised, so I don't blame them for holding the company to it.

MMmmmm, wounded in battle when he was young. Many of today's youth, though able to fight or work, choose lazy.
