Why can't police also be voluntary?

There is no federal law or constitutional requirement to have a law enforcement officer be employed by the state or city, is there?

Say a little girl is raped and murdered. People believe it's the pedophile living in their community. Do they gather him up and give him due process (REAL due process, not a kangaroo court)? No... likely, because of the fury they hold for the purportrator of the attack, they'll jump the gun and execute him before he has been tried and convicted.

The job of a police force is not only to protect the citizens from the bad guys, but to also protect the alleged bad guys from the citizens.

That's right. We should always wait until a pedophile is convicted in a real court of law, THEN SHOOT IT!!!

I agree with you but that's not my point.

I am not saying eliminate law enforcement, but rather to use the same concepts as does fire - volunteer force who can do the same job as the police for basic operations; patrol, traffic violations, stopping drunken brawls. This does not mean that investigations of murders or robberies need to use voluntary resources, like fire departments who are voluntary don't have arson investigators on staff but depend on regional resources to provide that.

As for impartiality, we don't have that now. With the advent of the militarized police and federal involvement with even traffic stops, we can't count on any impartiality and this is one of the causes for fighting over the rights of the individual in court - to protect the rights of the individual from the government.
I am also not saying we need to eliminate basic laws, we got along for the first 125 years without the need to have a sue happy, civil rights style world of justice. We had our problems but more often than not we survived.
