I know Turtle should be the one answering this, but I'll take a shot at it too since I like shooting fish in a barrel. Here's a hint - remember the goatherds? To allow them to return to their village was the worst possible course of action.
I totally agree. These type of missions require complete security.
Secondly, that the Lt. brought it up for discussion is unheard of in military procedure.
I believe that when those type of forces are out on those type of missions there isn't debate but there is some opinions that are sought and offered. Thats why they are Teams.
He was the senior officer in the group and he should have made the decision, given the order and the members under his command follow the order.
I agree but as you know it does not hurt to get a second or third option (time permitting) before the Commander makes the decision.
Once soldiers begin to bring combat decisions up for discussion and votes, they have chaos
Yes again I agree but, these are not the run of the mill GI's, they are a well oiled killing machine. These teams are packed with 'Been there done that' fighters and to ignore the knowledge of other veterans if/or when you had enough time is dumb.

Do you really think the military would name a warship after someone that is not fully deserving of it?

Yes.

The results of his actions illustrates a problem with leadership.

Even though he did do something beyond what was expected after getting into trouble, his leadership led them to a point of no return and that trouble. Asking other members who you are leading is not leadership, making a decision and sticking to it is.

It may have been the Navy's turn for a MoH and that's all but the accoladed given out to him seem to be a little higher than deserved. There are many many many more people who have done much more in their military careers that may have deserved a lot more than the MoH but received nothing at all. I met one such man who charged a building with Japanese shooting at him, he was the last survivor of his group and he killed 7 Japanese and that saved a lot of lives. He got a "job done well" and went on fighting.

I am in DC and I have a charity that works with these wounded warriors daily. It is an honor to help these men and women for what they have been through and what they have accomplished. The stories I hear never cease to amaze me.
