Paul did pretty good with the broker/carrier. They are both federal authorities. I guess my short answer would be that carrier authority allows you to transport freight across state lines and nation wide. The broker authority basicly give you the authority to sell (or broker) freight. Most carriers will have both. A broker only cannot have anything to do with actually moving the freight, he can only broker the load to someone who has the "carrier" authority to move it.

Here is what the FMCSA says here: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

Note: I don't think many use the contract carrier authority anymore(?). Most, I think, I use the Common carrier authority.
Why Thank YOU Rocketman for such a great answer to my question! It is so nice to be able to ask questions and get answers! Thank you so VERY much! :):)

You know, you all turn even a simple question that is asked into a free for all.
Welcome to EO. ;)

I'm glad I have a lot stronger personality than most people in this world, because some of you are the most negative people I have ever met, and I thought my own family had that prize.
You obvy haven't met my family, lol.

You take even a simple learning opportunity someone is making an effort to create and turn it into something much more.
You post anything on an open forum and you get responses [if you're lucky] that range from asinine to condescending to well written & informative. The smart thing to do is use what you can, respond to what you just can't ignore [ok, that's maybe not the smart thing to do, but we do it anyhow] and don't let the yoyos get under your skin too much - they like it.

Any one of you could have simply answered the question without any ragtag comments about my business (which no matter what I've shared, you still don't really know anything about, just as I know nothing about yours) or my supposed naivety. You all are so barking up the wrong tree when you assume anything about me at all.
They're not assuming anything about you - it's about what you know [about expediting, which is a different animal than OTR trucking.] And quite a few are trying to help, in their own special ways.

Thanks for the comments and responses, but I do think I'll go back to lurking.

That's where I was naive, thinking I might get on here and share and would get any better treatment than anyone else.
If you expected 'better' treatment, that's naive all right. The best compliment people here can pay is to treat you like one of us - and that they have done. We don't tolerate fools - but you're not a fool, so hang around.

If someone isn't Load One, Bolt, or Panther, etc., then they couldn't possibly be doing worth a spit in this business, right?
Wrong. I couldn't succeed with Panther [or Bolt], because we're all different, and success comes in different packages with different wrappers for each of us. That's why EO works for me: there's more than one way to do it 'right', and this is where you can learn different ways to do it.
Course, you have to 'pick the pepper from the flyspecks', [to quote the resident curmudgeon], but you also get to see Ragman's awesome illustrations, so there's that.
Again: welcome to EO. I hope you'll keep contributing.

A note to prospective drivers. If you think the constructive criticism in this thread is negative, aggressive or nitpicky, you should seriously consider not driving. Driving requires a certain skin thickness, because on a daily basis you will be dealing with dock workers, other drivers and possibly even law enforcement or your own carrier's safety department who will be dispensing real, unimagined negativity and aggression without the added nicety of useful content.

and .93 -.95 is no home run.....tho unfortunately its the close to the industry average ....most of the bigger carriers are between .95 - $1.00 range....so you are not running cheap... .85 is cheap....well let me say it is not a rate I would not want to run at consistently...i would take it to get out of a jam...

Only as a back haul would I take something under $1.00/mile. That is crazy to work for that amount unless you are trying to get home fast.

"Back Haul" is an OTR expression.....in expedite the next load is just that....the next load.....unless there is somewhere you need to be....usually when a dispatcher tries to use that term they are going to try to pass off a cheap load under the guise of a "back haul"....

I meant "back haul" literally, as in "back hauling myself back home" to get back to my normal life, and if I do it for $.90/mile, then so be it. My brokers won't even consider offering loads to any of their carriers (me and guys like me) for less than $1.20/mile on a load offer, usually higher, then they approach us with the "as a favor" method. Enough on that.

Rocketman, thank you for the clarification with the FMCSA link; I am right now in the process of signing up with a broker who is telling me I need to carry cargo insurance. I used your FMCSA FAQ #6 as to why I don't need to carry cargo insurance, falling under the "Common Carrier" and "Contract Carrier" definitions. I'm afraid all I have done is **** her off though, by being armed with the truth and correct information and being halfway knowledgeable about it, and going against what she is saying I need to have sounds argumentative, so now all she has to do is hit the "delete" button when she sees my name on an email... Oh well... They're others out there...That's why I come here.

Also, the question between what is a carrier vs. what is a broker is a very good topic. There are a lot of grey areas when it comes to this, and it seems like there is quite a bit of overlapping in the industry. LastChance2, that was a great question, and the responses for the most part have been informative to me and I hope other readers as well.
