My first few days expediting

have been pretty busy. It took a while to get the title and apportioned tag done in Texas, three days actually, and then I waited a day for a load out of Texas. I picked up in McAllen, TX Sat. 10/9 at 1300 and had delivery sched. for Mon. 10/11 at 2359 in Toledo, OH for 1636 loaded miles. Next was a run from Sandusky, OH to Wixom, MI for 128 loaded. Then Romulus, MI to Findlay, OH for 100 loaded. Next was Swanton, OH to South Bend, IN for 134 loaded followed by Rochester, IN to Lafayette, IN for 64 loaded but due to special circumstances it paid the equivalent of 130 loaded. I'm already scheduled for 242 loaded from Frankfort, IN to Clyde, OH tomorrow at 0700 with a 1300 delivery time. So in 120 hours from the time of my first pickup to tomorrow's delivery I will have run 2304 loaded miles and 529 DH miles. My DH would be much less except it took 350 to get to the Texas pickup. So far I am very pleased with my start.

Wow sounds like a great start! You may have mentioned in another post but who are you leased to?

That's a great way to get started. Enough to wet my appetite a little more.

I'm also from Texas LDB and I'm looking at making a move into expediting.

Your posts as well as many others have certainly helped me learn more about this field.

I had a couple of good runs to start things off and found myself in Franklin, KY. I decided to head home to Texas since I was half way there and got a load that took me down into MS. I am now in Hammond and will go home tomorrow. Friday evening I will position in south Texas and Saturday get a load running back up to Detroit or Toledo or somewhere and have another big paycheck well underway. It's still good enough I think I'll do it for at least another week. ;)

Say you have dropped a load off at Indy, for example, and you have waited several hours for a load but none has shown up. How do you know that freight is hot is Louisville, or Cincy or other spots? Should you then dead head for Lou or Cincy? :+ :+

Well,

There are no guarantees on anything of course however I would rely on dispatch to guide me. I am too new now to not depend on them to help me out. I believe they do their best to look out for my best interest because that's a byproduct of them looking out for their own best interests.

I'll just throw my 7 1/2 cents (Canadian)...that's about 2 cents US...in here.
Waiting several HOURS!!!!!!??????
from the sounds of it; waiting a day or more is common.
How many trucks are there ahead of you?
How many in the area you want to go to?
What is the carrier's policy; after all they need someone to cover whatever loads should turn up.
All those factors (plus about a dozen more I've never thought of) would play into a stay or move decision.

How do you know how many trucks are ahead of you in a given area? Can you call and ask? How much freight is also in an area? Is all this info on the Quaalcom? :+ :+

You would have to get all that information from dispatch. None of it will be on Qualcomm. Depending on the area you may have a fair idea of how many trucks because there may only be one decent t/s in the area and you'll see who else is waiting. It also depends on what time it is. A lot of expediting seems to come up in the afternoon and evening, at least in my limited exposure so far, so you might have to wait 15-18 hours to be in the prime time. I want to order the expediting book I've heard about. Can't remember the name now but it may be available through this website. I hope it will give a lot of this information too.

With FECC our Qualcom tells us how many trks and sizes there are at the recomended L/O site. While in the L/O center this info is updated every 3 hours. So you can sort of keep track of your position in the dispatch order. In addition we can call in to the VRU(Voice response Unit)to get even more detailed info, such as the number of teams.
