My "broken" Rigmaster & GREAT service

Stopped at Speedco and had oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter changed on my Rigmaster. I told them it takes 3 quarts of oil. They do their thing and the guy comes to get me and tell me it's ready to start "but may need some oil drained out first". They proceed to drain some off and then check it and it's right on the full mark. It refuses to start. We try a few times but it just won't fire.

Problem(s) are filling oil too fast causing oil to flow over the camshaft and into the cylinder and/or filling oil too full causing it to get into the cylinder. Once either of these things happen the only solution is to remove the glow plugs and then turn the engine two or three revolutions to push the oil out of the cylinder. After doing this it fires right up.

Craig already pointed out the too fast problem the other day and today while getting it corrected I learned of the overfilling problem leading to the same failure.

I had it fixed at:
LANDMARK INTERNATIONAL TRUCKS
4801 Rutledge Pike P.O. Box 6539
Knoxville, TN, 37914
Phone: 865-546-9781

They did a GREAT job. They not only corrected this problem but also located and tightened loose clamps causing a very slow coolant leak as well as inspecting the entire unit. They are very well trained on these units and know just what they are doing with them. They originally installed this particular unit but I had no interaction with them until today. I am impressed with how serious they are about their Rigmaster business. They currently have a 10 ranking with me and I will do my best to have them work on my unit any time it needs service if at all possible.

I had the same problem with my Rigmaster at Speedco. I called Ray at Espar of Michigan and he told me what to do to fix it. I was impressed with how Speedco owned up to the mistake. I was, of course, a VERY unhappy camper when I left after the oil change. They did give me $25 off my bill and made an effort to get it going. But without knowing what the fix was, and it being a Saturday morning and no one to call, there was nothing they could do.

After fixing the unit Monday morning, I sent an e-mail to Speedco about the problem and how to fix it. Within 3 hours I had a phone call from them and a gift certificate that came in the mail 2 days later. Their willingness to own up to the problem, and not make some lame excuse, will keep me a customer.

Leo, I'm so glad you posted this "fix" for the problem. We experienced the same problem with our Rigmaster when we had the oil changed at a TA. Wouldn't you think Rigmaster would put a sign on the Rigmaster, itself, saying to add oil VERY slowly?! My husband is now obsessed with making certain anyone who touches the Rigmaster knows about it. By the way, it is the same thing if you add more oil to get it up to the full level - add it very slowly! india

I got s really really dumb question, how many of these units have by pass oil filters to extend the oil change cycle?

You know that they put on by pass filters on the same engines they put in reefers to extend oil change cycles.

Yes, you can be bitten by too fast and too full. I believe mine was both as the guy told me when he came in to say they were ready to start it that they had to take some out first. Now that I know, I'll be sure they measure exactly 3 quarts into a clean container and then slowly put it in using a funnel.

Ok, i may see an issue with this. If you can get it for being overfilled. If you put in 3 qts and the oil filter hasnt been filled then there is that little bit where it is over filled. I wonder if that could be an issue. I wonder if you should put in 2qts or so turn it on for a bit and then add the other 2 while its running. Just trying to look at all avenues here and possible issues.
