I rarely browse this forum anymore. This is a topic I saw and it needs spoken to. Once again we have a scripture verse taken out of context.
The verse in question is from II Thess.3:10. Paul was addressing a problem of idleness and indolence, by people who refused to work, and were using Paul's teachings to justify a DO NOTHING LIFESTYLE. He was cautioning the Thessalonians to be very careful in allowing this sort of behavior to infect the assembly. The Bible must be interpreted in the time frame in which it was written (remember all scripture is for us but not all scripture is about us). Thus jobs in todays economy are quite a bit different than in Biblical times. Going to college or technical school is preparation, akin to the farmer in Biblical times preparing a field for crops. Certainly it is not "not working." All through scripture the strong are exhorted to care for those who cannot care for themselves. As for military service, and service connected disabilities,God's law to ancient Israel was to care for warriors who could no longer care for themselves. Today, it is somewhat different, but the principle is exactly the same. American society provides opportunities for soldiers to transition to peace, and to take their rightful place as productive members, whether disabled or not. And this is a facet of God's grace in action as the Almighty values the American military, in spite of what you hear or read in the popular media, or from left wing, Godless theologians who hate Jesus Christ.
The nature of work has changed, don't forget. Watching my sons grow up, I thought that they were lazy, because they did not do hard, physical labor as I so often did.(C'mon there's produce trucks to unload, houses to gut, grass to cut, cement that needs poured, drywall to hang).. Instead, they were involved in computers and electronics. Not only did they earn more money, they gauranteed their futures, and they certainly will not have the health problems that I am now experiencing.
Arkjarhead, I salute you as a fellow grunt. Things are much better for you (at least from a societal standpoint) than when I separated, nearly 4 decades ago. Now there is no stigma attached to military service. (I could tell you 2-3 stories but I'd get angry and depressed, and fight back tears). People can't relate to something that they haven't experienced. Take advantage of these grace provisions and opportunities. Rev. Hall is 100% on the mark..."be encouraged in the Lord".
God bless
