Some interesting thoughts here. When I saw the Tony Martin link, my gf is from England & I was like "holy cow!! that's one of the first mega conversations we had, this guy Tony Martin. I remember that story!!!!" Brought back a flood of nice memories.

Danny, Martin is free - I put a new link on ... up a few posts :)

I've zero sympathy for crooks, having worked for what I have, my entire adult life.
But vigilante 'justice' cannot be tolerated, either.
A homeowner who chases the guy down has the right to restrain him, but not to shoot him - there is no imminent threat to justify that.
I wonder how those in favor of vigilantism would feel if they were shot by someone who 'thought' they'd done something wrong?
That you were innocent and they were mistaken doesn't matter, once you're dead.

Black man shoots two white men along with wounding a Deputy. Deputy Say's no harm. Happened in Mississippi. I don't remember the name of the movie, but this story is the exact script.:D Mathew McConaughey (sp) was the white lawyer, Samuel Jackson was the shooter of the two white guys who had raped his daughter.

As for the original question, he's guilty of Man Slaughter at least.

Vigilantism MIGHT not work but what we have now is NOT working. We have to stop excusing criminal activity. By the way, how do you propose that a 60 year old man "restrain" a 16 year old punk who is high on PCP? A 16 year old punk with a rap sheet as long as I75 and is STILL not locked up for life? What is your solution? More social programs?

A Time To Kill by John Gresham. It was his very first book, later made into a movie.

What is this book about? I have never made it through a Gresham book yet, so how about a brief idea so we know why this applies to this thread?

I believe that it was on one of my movie channels about 2-3 months ago.
I never read the book, but the movie kept me awake :D

There may be another fallacy brewing here and it prompts asking what is vigilante "justice" anyway?

I see this as a two part issue, one is the protection of people and property while the other is after the event.

It doesn't really. I suppose you could stretch it and say the guy who ran down the block and shot the other guy is the same kinda sorta revenge that happened in the book (and the movie) where the father of the girl who was raped laid in waiting in the courthouse for the prisoner transfer and then shot them, but it's a long stretch. It's the same kind of stretch that someone will create a new screen name just to participate in the Soapbox, and then say they remember something that happened in a book or a movie and failed to note that the remembrance was from the book or the movie, just to get people stirred up. But I digress.

The book's actually very good. By far his best writing, which was probably because the publisher kept sending it back to him over and over again for a rewrite.

OK, I was just wondering since I have never seen the movie nor read the book. I tried to read a book by him once, forget the title, and fell asleep. It seems that his style does not agree with my tastes.
