If I sign on with one company can I sign on with more than one company at a time to make sure I am always loaded and rolling?

read the contract.....most won't allow it....its called "exclusive use"

and as has been said here before, signing with multiple carriers does not mean more freight for you...the business just doesn't work like that...it can actually "hurt" rates....

It just depends on what your contract with the company says. I have to ask why compete with yourself? For the most part you just drive your own price down. Do a search on here there have been some good discussions on the issue.

Chef beat me to the punch but I think you can start to get the picture.

You may be able to get your own authority to book & haul freight, but must cover the carrier's DOT/MCC numbers [magnetic blank signs] and have your own insurance as well. Check with the carrier first, each has it's own rules.

You can if ya really want to. You'd have to sign on with companies that would allow it though. It's worked for some people, others not so well.

As for getting ya more freight. I'd say in my case that no, it didn't. As was mentioned, ya might drive the rates down too. For instance, you're the only truck in BFE. Two companies think they've got a truck there. So when a load comes up they bid against each other, when actually you're the only one there.

Also it's important to communicate to both companies. Some companies will say it's ok to work for 2 but then get upset when ya take a run for the other one. One company that allows ya to work for others will call ya early in the morning every morning to see where you're at. This would be a PITA I guess if ya only worked for only them though. Another company that allows ya to work for others takes quite awhile to pay, like up to 2-3 months. They tell ya that going in, so no one's misleading ya or anything. Still it means you've got to be able to have enough $$ to last that long out there until ya get those first few checks. Basically, the companies that will allow ya to work for others tend to have some drawbacks.

Overall, I guess it can work out. It has for some, so it can be done. My 2 cents likes just dealing w/ one company though.

The companies that will allow this are smaller companies that rely on brokered freight, so they're all drawing from the same freight sources. If you're the only truck in a certain area, how does it benefit you to have multiple companies bidding against each other for the same load?

You cant fly 2 dot numbers at the same time.So you cant be leased to 2 diferent companies at the same time.If you run your own authority, you would be able to partner with more than 1 company, therefore this might be what you want to do.

Simply put, how many GOOD reputable solid carriers allow an owner operator to do this? None that I know of.

If you have a minimum price that you will run for , then it doesn't matter that they are bidding against each other . You still get your minimum rate . Cool . You just made $$ .Also , even the Mom and Pop shops have preffered exclusive contacts . So you may get a run that you normally wouldn't just because that carrier has those special contacts in that certain area . Bingo . You just made $$ . From my own personal experience , I feel that it works better .

So far it is working for me. Ceva does not have exclusive use of me and my truck, this is in the contract.
Recently, I've picked up a m-f run through Ceva and then run for Towne Air in the morning. I am not running as a true expeditor as most companies on here are though.

That situation drives the overall rates down, which affects the profit margin at the carrier, which eventually affects the rates given to owner operators. I fail to see how that is in anyone's best interest.

Wow! This poster went from "wondering" to "how can I best screw the pooch", in a couple days. That's what I call initiative. I'd suggest tho, you learn to walk before you make an attempt at running.
