mpg update

I rarely exceed 2500 rpm and usually stay below 2200. I accelerate very gradually. I use the cruise control when possible. My driving style is mpg friendly but not so speedy delivery friendly. Even so, I'm never late absent traffic or other uncontrollable events. That said, I filled up in Carnesville, GA at the J. It was maybe 1/3 mile to get on the interstate. I drove mpg fashion to Richburg, SC. It was 159.2 miles to the delivery. My trip computer said 18.7 mpg. It is withing 1/4 mpg when I do the math. I'll double that to half a mpg error. That still means I was getting 18.2 mpg at least and that's with 2006 pounds of freight loaded. That's on gasoline, not diesel. Good mileage can be achieved if you are willing to drive for it rather than the quickest ETA.

Slow and steady is the best idea for us straight truck people too. We got 10.7 on the run coming up from TX to TN. The other BIG plus to driving slow is NOT having to worry about speed. Driving a little UNDER the speed limit eleminates speeding tickets.

Those are great numbers Leo! I thought with fuel going up again I would see more slow and steady but it hasn't turned out that way yet.

What tire pressures did you end up settling on?

Yepp I am also one of the drivers that all of the other expedite drivers fly around....Rather pay my fuel bill then theres....back in the day (a few years or so ago) i drove faster to deliver and get on the board for a new load.......However those days are about gone with vans being pre-loaded for there next trip....ocasionally it happens....

I have the 4 speed and tires are 62/82 warm. I also now have full synthetic engine oil. I think I'm going to 66/84 warm next time. My hero was the tortoise, not the hare.

Leo, big mistake. The rears need to be an odd number. Like 81, 83, 85... Can't be front and rear the same. If one is odd the other has to be even, and odd always works better in the rear. Don't know why thought. I'm sure Moot could explain it.

I have noticed that the cetane rating at most diesel pumps is 40.But I bought fuel at the Wilco in Wytheville the other night that has a cetane rating of 45.What a difference that made.It ran so much stronger, smoother, and I gained 1.2 mpg more than average, and this was going north on 77,64 west, 35 north with 1,400# in the back.WhenI was ordering my gas pedal assembly I mentioned this to the Ford guy and he said That they recommend using a cetane improver all the time, along with Ford filters only.He told me to go onto You Tube and punch in Ford oil filters and scroll down to Fubar wrong oil filter on a 6.0. It was amazing why it is a good idea to use Ford filters only.

Nice, very nice. We did well on our last run as well. The last two fill ups got us 11.5 and 10.88 mpg. That was with a load of almost 1600lbs and running the reefer.

I'll bet Turtle will agree, slow and steady wins the race:D

Whats the capacity of the truck?

1600lbs seems to be out of step with the Fed's idea of what you should take, or am I wrong?

The capacity of my truck is 18,000lbs. I take any legal load that will fit on my truck as long as I think I can make a fair profit on it. When I run light I make more money per mile.

The weight/size of the load is not the only thing that FDCC or J.M. Expediting LLC looks at. Special equipment, reefer, is a team needed? All those matter. We might be the only truck in the area or the only "art" qualified team. It is often hard to say why loads are offered, but what the heck, bucks be bucks!

The load that brought us here was even better. We were the only reefer truck in Houston where it picked up. Paid very well and was really heave compared to the last load!! This one weighed 73lbs!!! I think our average weight is just a little over 1200lbs this year so far.

Got 10.91mpg
