All the info I've read on this forum is TOP SHELF. If someone want's to get involved in this business,EO is the place to go!!!! All the moderater's are knowledgeable, experienced, and most of all Caring. However, I'm asking for advice on getting OFF the road!!!!! I've been driving a CMV for 15 yrs. now. TT... Straight... Step van... 10 wheel dumps... dump trailers... reefers. I wanna stay in the industry, but I'm not sure which direction to take.Perhaps someone out there can steer me in the right direction. Thanks to everyone!!!

Wow, your options are only limited by your imagination. How about in the Safety Dept of a carrier. You have the experience and hopefully your record is one to be proud of. Or possibly you could teach others to drive at a College or Tech center, depending on where you live? If your as old as dirt and thinking retirement maybe you should contact attorneys in your area and offer your expertise as a expert witness? Hope some of these idea's help get you thinking. Good luck on your new career.

You've definately got me thinking. I know enough lawyers to call. I went to high school with a few. Only thing is,I haven't filled out an application in a long long long time.Don't have a resume" either. How do I go about contacting trucking companies???

Slowhand,

As Glen said, perhaps a saftey department of a company. I'd suggest calling them directly and asking for the saftey department, and just feel them out.

Also, my thought would be a recruiter. As someone who has actually BEEN in the industry, your perspective would be a great advantage.

Many times, its seems recruiters are professional SALESMEN (no offence to any of our recruiter posters..LOL)... you can really tell the difference in the ones who've actually spent time on the road.. they understand the driver's real issues.

Best of luck,

Spend the next two weeks writing down everything you know about the industry, what youve read over the years, what you know. Example how much faster or longer does a tire and brakes wear and why on a dump vs a tractor and why? Saftey, service on the vehicles I am sure you could give us all great tips some we probably would pay for. Ask your wife/girlfriend to write down your strenghts.

Compile that list/lists and there should be your resume, there is a big difference in resume's compiled in day vs one that is thought out and is detailed but not to detailed. You are selling yourself and you need to be the best sales person you can be.

With your experience, you have more options than one could print. Everything from EO, other web sites, publications will all have ideas. My wife and I have just come off the road recently and are in the process of launching another fleet. As mentioned, your imagination would be your only limitation.
Good Luck on a new adventure

Industry knowledge you have, job seeking knowledge you need. Job sites like http://www.monster.com and http://www.careerbuilder.com provide career advice and resume help. Your state employment office (or whatever they call it in your state) will also have a bundle of free information that may be of use to you.

You could also be an independent investigator for trucking companies tht unfortunately need to check on their drivers. Met a guy in Iowa once who did that.Example a small company has 10 trucks running local routes. Nine of them average 10 mpg,one gets 5 mpg,so the driver of that unit is doing something fishy, perhaps selling off fuel etc.Get the idea
