Move Those Transponders and Stickers

CSA 2010 motivates us all to be more diligent in little things that did not seem to matter much before. Diane and I recently "remodeled" our windshield by moving transponders and stickers to legal areas.

It's been a while but I seem to recall that when we got our EZ-Pass and PrePass transponders in the mail, they came with instructions saying to mount them on the top center of the windshield. We did so without giving it another thought since nearly every transponder we see on a truck is similarly mounted.

Then we re-read our FMCSA book and discover these paragraphs:

"(e) Prohibition on obstructions to the driver’s field of view

—(1) Devices mounted at the top of the windshield. Antennas, transponders, and similar devices must not be mounted more than 152 mm (6 inches) below the upper edge of the windshield. These devices must be located outside the area swept by the windshield wipers, and outside the driver’s sight lines to the road and highway signs and signals.

"(e)(2) Decals and stickers mounted on the windshield. Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspection decals, and stickers and/or decals required under Federal or State laws may be placed at the bottom or sides of the windshield provided such decals or stickers do not extend more than 115 mm (41/2 inches) from the bottom of the windshield and are located outside the area swept by the windshield wipers, and outside the driver’s sight lines to the road and highway signs or signals."

Seeing that, we moved the oil-change sticker, a gate-entry sticker and transponders. The stickers went to the bottom. The transponders went to the top right of the windshield, less than six inches from the top and outside the area swept by the wipers. We moved a FedEx-installed panic button antenna off the windshield onto the door post.

Double-sided tape made by 3M works well to re-secure the devices. If you find yourself starting to pry a device off the glass, try twisting it instead. You are less likely to scratch the glass or damage the device.

We have been through several inspections of different levels with this truck and have never been cited or warned about windshield obstructions.

Nevertheless...well, never mind. You already know.

A Team - do you have an XM radio or GPS and are they mounted on the windshield and where? Trying to determine where to put ours after this nice post of yours.

Our GPS (Garmin) mounts on the dash board, not the windshield. Satellite radio antenna is mounted outside on the roof.

Where this could get tricky is with the GPS and satellite radio suction cup mounts on the windshield. I have my GPS, XM, and a cell phone cradle all mounted like that, but I'm in a Sprinter and not in a CMV. I guess that would probably get me in trouble if I was in a straight.

I have my GPS in the left bottom corner of the windshield very close to the dash. It doesn't block my vision at all.
I'm left handed so it works for me:)

Be aware that in Minnesota and California, you aren't allowed anything stuck (suctioned, taped, whatever) to to the inside of the windshield. I don't know if they enforce it for out-of-state vehicles, but I do know it's enforced for -in-state vehicles.

I don't have anything suctioned to my windshield. I use that thermal window covering, which is impossible to secure if stuff is stuck on the window.

I used the gray molding double-sided tape to mount the XM on the doghouse console of the Sprinter, and the Scangauge II and the Garmin are mounted the same way on the rim of the instrument panel at the dash.

Turtle...i see you have the AC on and you are only idling at the 700 rpm....is that red light the seatbelt light? I idle mine at about 1,000/1200 rpm when I do idle..

Yeah, the red light is the seatbelt light. I also idle at around 1200. The reason it's idling so low is because I temporarily removed the idle stick so as to not let its harsh metal rod and orange clamp be a distraction from the delicate composition of the photo.

A few minutes after I took the photo, which was a few minutes before I posted it, I shut the engine off.

I also have a Seidio case, the pregnant one 'cause I have the extended battery. If you look close, you'll see that it's really not mounted at all. There's a pad thingy that the phone is sitting on, extending an inch or so into view on the left, and it extends to the right side of the phone. It's a foamy, rubbery piece of kitchen drawer shelf liner that i got at Lowe's.

It's not the greatest, but for the most part the phone doesn't slide all over the place like it would without it. I may eventually get a Seidio mount, as that one will work with the Innocases.

I put velcro on the back of my Nextel phone/radio that works great for keeping it on the dash, but wasn't really keen on putting a strip of velcro on my Droid. The dash in my truck has a nearly vertical area, not like the shelf on your Sprinter

Don't they make a high idle option for those sprinter things?
Yeah, but it's the same as the aluminum wheel option. You want aluminum wheels, you got aluminum wheels. You want steel wheels, you got steel wheels. Not all that easy to go back and forth on a whim.

The high idle option is one that gets programmed into the ECU. It's one or the other, all the time, can't switch back and forth without reprogramming the thing.

In Europe, tho, they have a dash switch that switches back and forth. Apparently, they wanted to keep the pricing down over here. :D There's a really lot of options that are available in Europe that aren't here.

I don't know what the deal is on the later model Sprinters, tho. They have all kinds of toys that the earlier models don't have.

and the pre set idle is 2,000 rpm...way too high sounds like it is racing

It is set at 2,000 RPM's. I have one. The paper work I had on it said it is set that high to allow good oil PSI and to keep the EGR clean. The parking brake has to be set before flipping the rocker switch on the pannel. Hit the brake and it goes back to reg. RPM, Release the parking brake and it goes back, flip the switch and it goes off. You can only adjust how fast it reaches 2,000 rpm, unable to lower from 2,000.

What's redline? Most diesels its around 2700 to 3000. 2000 sounds high, great for warming it up on a cold morning though

2000 is high. At 65 MPH it's around 2300. But if 2000 is what it takes to keep the oil pressure and the EGR open, so be it, I guess.

I have no idea what the redline is. Don't have an actual red line on the RMP-o-meter. The dial goes to 7000. It won't go that high, tho. The speed-o-meter goes to 120 MPH, but it won't go more than 84.

In the early days Pre-Pass sent out DOT waivers that allowed placement in the recommended position.
