I remember when I was in the Navy and all the countries we went to never had a problem using US dollars . At one time the dollar was as good as gold but now more countries like Mexico are talking about not accepting the dollar

Welcome to a Canadians world...

How does it feel?

I wish Canada would do the same thing as Mexico....

That's because the USD$ isn't worth what it once was.

usd =81 yen.......2002 it was worth, 134.77
usd= 12.40peso...just last year in 2009, worth 15.15peso's

The list goes on and on..... The common man hasn't quite grasped that one day , his Peso's will be worth more than a dollar!

But companies in Mexico can read a chart.....and most of those resorts are US company owned.....and it was as good as gold until we printed it like it is toilet paper.

Try to go into a restaurant in, say, Columbus, OH, and pay for your Big Mac with Canadian currency.

I'm not sure why Mexico attempting to stem the tide of drug money by not accepting US Dollars is a reason to boycott them, tho.

Too funny .....

Hey LDB,

Just outta curiosity - what forms of foreign currency are you willing to accept as legal tender in payment on a regular basis ?

(I'm thinking that stench I'm smelling is ....... arrogance ..... or ...... hypocrisy ..... or mebbe both ......)

I'm not trying to get tons or foreign money and illegally entering a nation to get their money. Mexicans are criminally entering the country all the time to get as much money as they can to send back to Mexico. The hypocrisy is on their part.

A couple decades ago in a Toastmasters meeting a woman gave her impromptu speech on how men's moustaches often smell pretty bad but the man is used to it and doesn't notice it or doesn't realize that's where the bad smell he's noticing is coming from. It was an interesting speech and the couple of guys in the room with moustaches were trying to discreetly tell if they smelled or not.

What you are doing has no bearing on the matter ... just answer the question .... what foreign currency are you currently accepting ?

Oh ..... what's that you say ? ..... you don't accept any ?

Yet you feel that you have some sort of expectation or right to demand that public and private establishments in a foreign sovereign nation ought to accept the currency of your land ?

What a utterly pompous and arrogant viewpoint .....

Mexicans are criminally entering the country all the time to get as much money as they can to send back to Mexico.
Some Mexicans ......

Of course, since "some" means "only a part of, but not the entirety of, the whole" ..... it's probably fairly safe to assume that not all Mexicans "are criminally entering" this country "all the time" ......

In fact, if I had to guess, Mexican folks who own/have/operate ongoing businesses in Mexico (the ones that would be declining those US greenbacks) likely aren't sneaking across the border to work as a migrant farm laborer or lawncare specialist ....

Dunno .... I might be wrong about that ..... but I don't think so ... :D

America is very unfriendly towards accepting Can currency...outside of tourist spots in border states...even US vending machines won't take Can. coins...but in Canada machines and nearly all accept US money...The US has a bad reputation of being unfriendly like this....sorry but that is the way it is known back home....

You would think that business along the major Interstates out of Canada, like I-75 all the way down to Florida, would take Canadian currency. Nope.

I've been to places in Canada where if it's $10 Canadian and I hand them $10 US, the cashier punches in $10 US and the cash register automatically does the conversion and they hand me back change in Canadian. Simple and quick.

I am not sure but I think more Americans(tourists and truckers) go to Canada than Canadians come to the US.

The most recent year that I could find numbers for both is 2008.
Statistics Canada - Travel and tourism - Summary tables

Travelers to Canada by country of origin, top 15 countries of origin
Canadians to US

Trips Into US - 18,915,000
Nights Spent - 146,602,000

Travelers to Canada by country of origin, top 15 countries of origin
Americans to CA

Trips Into CA - 12,503,000
Nights Spent - 51,392,000

Here's an interesting (well, not really) breakdown of the top 15 states visited by Canadians. Interesting in that most of the states are very predictable, since they are border states, but Florida ranks #2. And Vegas is #6.
Travel by Canadians to the United States, top 15 states visited

Same thing in reverse, where to people come from who go to Canada. Turns out, a surprising number from Texas, and Florida.

A LOT of places will accept Canadian money, it wasn't until I went to NYC for the first time I had any issue with using Canadian money.

There are a lot of places here that take it one on one for goods and services.

BUT also there are places that will accept the Euro and the Peso.

The thing is Leo, it is cutting their own throat by refusing the dollar simply because it is still the most widely transfered currency there, same with Cuba.

The issue of boycotting Mexico because of this is a bit too late. I think smart people would have looked beyond the beaches and resorts and go somewhere else, like Bahamas or even places here in our country. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to see that they depend on tourism as much as they depend on that dollar going there, so cut them off until they play nice.
