More Doom & Gloom to preach!

Now I'm not going to get on here and preach about the bad economy and how its going to affect your bottom line, or how my financial statis will make the difference in how I survive these hard economic times and you may not. I'm here to talk about everyones safety through this tanking economy.

Statistically, when our economy experiences a slowdown the crime rates go up. Depending on how bad the economy gets and the number of jobs lost, we see different types of crimes occur. More interesting is the people involved in these crimes.
In desperate times people do desperate things. Even people that have never committed a crime before. Its sad but true.

Recently a young truck driver was robbed, shot and killed while sleeping in his truck in Columbia,SC. A pregnant wife and children in New York no longer have a husband and father. Yesterday in Alabama a man went on a shooting spree killing family members and innocent people that were in the wrong place at the wrong time. He then drove to the place he worked and killed himself. Sadly ten souls were lost.

Now I can't say that these two incidents were caused by the economy, but I will say this, especially as drivers now than ever we need to be more cautious about where we park and sit or sleep overnite so as not to become easy targets for the desperate. Historically truck drivers have been seen as an easy target in the eyes of the criminal.

Ask yourself this, is that rest area or strip mall parking lot, the Walmart, or industrial park street you like to park at going to be as safe as in the past? We are always a possible victim to crime, but now more than ever we need to be on guard for our safety!

Streakin, this is an excellent post!
We all should be reminded to be attentive to our surroundings and to be a little more cautious than we might have been in the past.

Truckers are easy targets because they are law abiding citizens and they are not allowed by law to have anything in the truck to defend themselves with.

No Laws against weapons in your truck on a federal level... state laws apply to guns and of course your Carriers rules apply. Common mis-nomer.

The bad guys are always a problem, bout anywhere. Kinda like freight...ya never know. I always kept MYSELF safe. Also, served the bad guys a bit of a notice on the side of the cab that announced I don't call 911.

It mostly depends on which company decals you have on your truck. If you have a certain carriers decals on the side of your truck "even the dumb criminals will know that you are bankrupt" and that they will not be able get any money from you, thus you will be safe from robbers...Any how stay safe out there guys.

Yet, you should still strive to be reliable. :D

It was just a joke. Well, if criminals read EO, they would see all the gloom and doom in here. The only truck they would rob would be Relnts truck. lol

For what it is worth...most criminals are lazy and will take the path of least resistance to accomplish their goal, shoplifting, rolling drunks, burglaries etc. It is the druggies that bother me as they are NOT predictable. Their behavior is predicated on how bad they need to get high and what they perceive is the easiest path to get there.

Just a thought here...If your sleeper is your home, are you not allowed to protect your home passively by any means available to you? I am always armed while in my motor home, but if it is not visible or within my reach, you are not going to search without probable cause and a warrant. I know that DOT transcends this, or at least I assume that to be true. Mace or pepper spray is no good, regardless of the law because it incapacitates all involved and will render your truck useless until it dissipates. I would consider keeping one of those freon powered air horns for boats, they are small, and will scare the crap out of anybody, especially in close quarters. I would also consider hooking up an external speaker to both your Qual Com and CB radio. Use it to command someone away from your truck, the criminals do not like that kind of attention. The Qual Com would be if you received a communique while you were outside pre or post trip inspecting or doing maintenance. Also, consider putting your contact for an emergency situation under ICE in your cellphone. It stands for in case of emergency. Cops or ambulance personnel won't know who to call in your phone if you are found incapacitated for any reason. On that note, wear medic alert bracelets or necklaces if they apply, it could save your life.

Another good reason Ford motor should let us sleep on their lots while unde load for them..The carriers should argue this in our favor..I hate getting turned from the gate in the early hours of the morning when i am tired and told to come back in a.m.
Good way to get hi-jacked after the load arrived..
Case in point Cleavend engine plant,,watch yourself in that area around the plant at night...Ive had ppl appoarch the truck several times looking for spare change,,gas money,,etc etc,the whole time knowing they are just checking ya out...
