Yep, experience! I wouldn't consider, even for the second, second, placing newbees in any of my equipment. Truck owners will realize this one day, (if most have not already). Wanabe fools will cause nothing but heartburn, for everyone, dispatchers, owners, themselves. There are a lot of horror stories surrounding this subject, and have some good owners to be hard harted thieves. Someone with means cannot allow their fortunes to be placed in the hands of dispatchers and mewbee drivers, jest ani't natural.

Leo, practice what you preach, place some newbees in a new truck, and allow them to learn and prosper. Then we'll see what your tune may be.

Broom!! You cleaned toilets and we mowed yards! We had a very successful mom and pop lawn care business and that was a money maker. Hard work does pay because that is how we had our very large down payment. As a first time truck buyer you need the large down payment to get most truck dealerships to listen to you. We researched for 6 months on this site then we went to the Expo in Detroit and we spent another 6 months researching buying a truck and getting prepared for this business. We did not want an owner as we wanted to get into this business for the freedom of being your own boss. We did though have a back ground in trucking and we knew what the over the road truck driving was like. That was a huge help no nasty little surprises on what truck stops are like in the summer or many of the other incontinences out here.

Having spent many years assisting with the business side of running my dad's medical practice as well as several years owning my own business I then drove for an OTR company for a few months and spent many months researching and reading way back through the forums. I bought my truck when I started expediting.

Col, I never said I was putting someone with no experience in my truck. I said, and still do, that most people shouldn't go out and buy a truck when they have zero prior experience.

is there money in owning your own truck? I hope so,if the owner your driving for can pay you and the truck expenses, and make himself a profit, then why cant you drive for yourself and keep your pay and the owners profit
every company in the transportation industry, has a profit margin, owners of waffle houses do too, just thought I'd throw that inn,was thinking about a chocolate chip waffle,if J B hunt wasnt showing a profit, the share holders would be few and far between.so as i was saying,if you own the truck, you should have your wages and truck share too,now if you dont manage your business properly, then see you in the soup line, and that also can happen owning a waffle house

But Leo, Isn't it a little unusual to advocate the risky idea of placing newbs in a truck, and not support the idea? Or, are you supporting the idea with someone elses truck, just not yours? Wondering if you are not supporting your whole idea, just the parts you like?

Every situation is different and has to be evaluated on it's own merits. Some newbies are going to be better than some experienced operators due to intelligence level, attitude, etc. so you can't say categorically no newbies, all newbies or anywhere in between. I am saying that in almost all cases it's going to be smarter for a newbie to drive someone else's truck than to buy their own. Finding that spot may be a challenge for them. From the other side, in some cases it's going to be smarter for an owner to put the newbie in the truck than picking an old hand.

Jes bust'in your chops Leo. However to clarify my definition a of a classic Newbee, it would be someone whom has likely been downsized, freshly retired, or, just changing, that has done little more than lean on a truck, with a freshly minted CDL, with accumulated windshield time that it took for a road test. Sorry, not for me.

But, to answer the original question, yes, you will be better off owning your own truck, if, you decide first, that you are going to "git R done", and not just "try it".

With all that WORK WORK WORK stuff, WOW, I thought I came to work to sleep (I do tell dispatch that) and that I am overpaid and UNDER worked!! I actually have ppl convinced of these things!

Really I'm in the top five earners in the company and I put in more hrs than everyone else. I even chase some cheap calls to bail out dispatch. FOrtunately they acutally remember these facts about hrs and chasing so for me it pays in the long run.
