This situation can not answered with a clear yes or no.
I think that under the rule of law, the answer is quite clear.

Criminals are routinely excused for their crimes when they can help in another case the prosecution deems more important.
That's not the rule of law ... that's the rule of men.

There is a difference.

Or when they are high level politicians.

The rule of law actually allows for that question to be answered with a YES. It allows the "rule of men" to afford compassion and mitigation.

And the rule of law is interpreted by men. ( women also) :p
The law is meant to applied ... in a fair and just manner ... not "interpreted" ... :p

To the extent that it is not applied in the same way, for different individuals being tried for the same offense, the law becomes unjust and unfair ...

Having said that, I do have to say that I am somewhat of a fan of that whole "I desire mercy not sacrifice ..." thing ... ;)

That's just it. . . The law IS unjust and unfair in many cases.

I would agree on two counts particularly:

1. With respect to many "crimes", the punishment does not fit the crime.

2. The application of the law on the part of those charged with applying it is inconsistent.

YEAH! If it WERE fair both Barrack and Hillary would be in jail right now and we would have Elmer Fudd as president.

(GO for it Ragman!)

Their ways are not our ways, and it would suck to be a woman subject [and I mean that literally] to Sharia law. That's my modern American view, of course, and many women who actually are subject to it would disagree: to each his own.
That said, I too noted that in this case, the guilty male is being punished as well - isn't that 'progress', at least? Because everything I've read says the woman is always and totally to blame for the man's bad behavior....
