Minneapolis-Saint Paul Layover Spots

This is in response to a question Turtle raised in the Minneapolis Bridge thread. I'm answering it in a new thread to keep the other one on topic. Turtle asked, "Where do people sit when in Minneapolis-St Paul, anyway? Doesn't seem to be many truck stops around here."

The no-brainers are the two TAs east and west of the metro area, and the AM Best south. Specifically, the TA in Hudson, WI, just across the river from Minnesota, I-94, Exit 4; the TA in Rogers, MN, I-94, Exit 207; and the AM Best in Rosemount, MN, on U.S. 52, south of Saint Paul.

When we get a load home, and do not go to the house but keep running instead (sometimes happens, but we usually go to the house at least for a shower), our favorite layover spot is the Mall of America on I-494, 24th Street exit, near the MSP airport.

The Mall has truck parking on the north side. It is not overnight but security will leave you alone until about 1:00 a.m. The Mall itself features many ways to pass your time; including a Barnes and Noble bookstore with overstuffed chairs, a multi-screen movie theater, restaurants of all types and even an indoor ammusement park. Shopping can be fun too, especially if you are in the market for refrigerator magnets. The Mall of America is the largest mall in the United States. It includes a refrigerator magnet store among other interesting shops.

If you end up spending the night in the Twin Cities, it is a short drive from the mall to the AM Best in Rosemount, where late-night space for truck parking will likely be available. The TAs may be full.

Freight-wise, the mall is an excellent place to sit. You are equidistant from downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and near the airport where a lot of freight activity occurs.

If you find yourself further south on U.S. 52, there is a very good truck wash in Zumbrota, MN. It has a self-service and full-service bay, and a detail shop. They charge about $50 to wash a straight truck but offer a heck-of-a deal to hand wax the truck. They hand-waxed our truck, top to bottom, bumper to bumper for $150.

Thanks. Good information. I had been to the TA in Rogers before.

I've also been to the Holiday MegaStop 15 miles or so south of town, just below where 35W and 35E come back together. It's at exit 81, 210th Street exit, in Lakeville, MN. Plenty of big truck parking. A McD next door, Subway and a couple of other things around back, a laundry and a hair salon.

Today I found the Stockmen's Truck Stop, 20 minutes before Moot clued me in about it. It's off I-494 about 7 miles dead east of the airport (as the crow flies), just before 494 goes across the Mississippi River. Southeast St Paul, I guess. It's at the Hardman Ave exit 64, right next to the Peterbilt dealer. There's certainly plenty of truck parking. Not much on van parking, but I'm splitting a truck spot with a bobtail. They do have free WiFi access, a very strong signal, and if that wasn't good enough, I'm getting sustained download speeds of 5mbit, a far cry from the 500k to 1.5 mbit of most places.

I forgot to mention something of interest to drivers with Carrier reefers on their trucks. A Carrier dealer is in Bloomington, MN, within walking distance to the Mall of America. We have not used them ourselves for the scheduled NIST certifications some FedEx Custom Critical trucks are required to have, but we plan to when we go home for Christmas. I talked to the sevice manager there in May. He said they get a few requests a year for that service but had not bought the equipment yet. Based on what he told me, I believe they will have it by now.

Yep. If you have to be at a Truck Stop, Stockmens is about as good as it gets, in that neighborhood.

I tried that NASCAR simulator at the Mall. Not having driven real NASCAR cars, I cannot say for sure how realistic the simulators are, but they seem pretty realistic to me. My performance disappointment was real. They give you a printout when you are done. It showed that I suck as a race car driver.

I was just up there last week (actually the day the bridge went down) I stayed at the Rogers, TA just long enough to shower. If you head east and get off at that exit there is a pretty decent Wal-Mart that i stayed at for a few days. Panther averages 2 a day out of there and i was 5th out for the weekend then i headed to Cedar Rapids from there to wait and get a load. I did goto the mall of america and i must say i really didnt care for the place.. Glad to say i was there, but probably wont go again mostly because there was too many people. I dont mind crowds and stuff but i just dont care for people in general. Especially those at malls with daddys credit cards...

My daughter loves that petting aquarium at the mall. You can pet sharks and rays. I like the casino south of town. Mystic Lake i believe it's called. I haven't been there in years, but the buffet was fantastic! They had plenty of truck parking and were working on a campground, actually, they were expanding and building the heck out of it last time I was out that way. It was a major project though, I'm not sure where they are in the process. I've stayed at stockman's before, if memory serves there is a freightliner dealer there also right?
