Minimum wage may go up to $10.10 in some state.

You also have much higher insurance premiums, your own collection department and waiting to get paid. Sometimes it may be easier to lease to a carrier.

Don't think so small, you can run your own stuff, you do not have to have your own collection department, you can have your own authority and with many brokers, they pay within 3 to 5 days and yes u can do it. My son does it, has over 60 brokers, that pay him in that time frame and does not run for any 2 bucks a mile, most of the time he gets 3 bucks a mile, you dont have to take cheap azz freight...education is a wonderful thing, the trucking industry has got lots of truckers duped into " you can't make it out here" mentality, but you can...................

Apparently FedEx does not carry enough liability or cargo or something because we can no longer get back haul loads through CH Robinson. So basically there are no back haul options for us anymore.

C H Robinson is one of the cheapest azz brokers out there.....there are plenty of better ones,,,,C H will ask you--example: will there John Q,,,what you got to have for that run from Atlanta to Memphis, and you most likely will say, well we need at least 2 dollars a mile,,, and they say, well would you take a dollar fifty,,,and you say ,,well ugh,,,I guess so..... Guess what,,you just left about 90 cents a mile on the table or more. If you guys will argue will them,,,they will pay more...just do it....................

Fed X most likely has the good load boards and they have access to what the lanes are paying, they know how many loads are going into each state and how many are coming out of each state, and what brokers are listed in each state and the type of load and what that freight lane is paying to the trucks, to the brokers, and the last ,,what that lane is paying on the average to all trucks. all that info is available to the big rig trucker that wants its,,

Who says it's small thinking? If it's so spectacular, why aren't you doing it? You're assuming that's somewhere in our career trajectory. Maybe I want to live in a trailer and own a gym. Maybe, just maybe, being leased to a carrier, capturing your own freight, letting the carrier handle things like cargo liability and collection, in exchange for a small slice of the revenue pie is some folks' version of trucking utopia.

My turn at assumption: someone is getting a haircut for that quick pay.

Here's an idea......why not go walk Hunt's Point at night wearing 6" stillettos? Come on, don't think so small.

Cause 6" stilletos clash with my tube top and pajama bottoms.

I see what skyraider and k9 are saying. Yes, there is that 3.00/mile freight. Finding it is a bit elusive, however... but it's there for the big rigs. Is it there for the expediters? I'm sure there is some. But put plainly, we, as expediters, have been suckered into buying what companies have decided what we need to survive. Fact is, we can't handle rate drops anymore.

The guy who has the wherewithal to find that 3.00 freight, and run with it, and be disciplined enough to keep his own authority intact while doing it, is the winner in this... not the ones tied to a company; cause like Skyraider said, there is an awful lot of money left on the table... we're getting scraps.

Probably time for a reality check. Is there $3.00 a mile freight out there? Yes, but it is primarily for tractors, and specialty hauling of some kind. Not expediting. Maybe some reefer/tval freight but very few are available on the open market through a broker.
Look at it this way, if there was any frequency to three dollar a mile freight, every carrier out here would be clamoring for it. Just not a reality unless you are talking government loads or a last minute Friday special. A look at Sylectus and a overview of numerous carriers give you some idea of the averages that are out there.

Your partially right about specialty as my son runs a reefer, but today he is running 35,000 lbs from Mobile to Memphis for $4.00 a mile x 400 is 1600 bucks...it can be done and by the way he does not run his reefer with shrubs on this load. ,,icecream pays 3 dollars or more a mile and he runs that frequently. Brokers will pay what you want, but you have to have the RateMate data to see what is paying what, you've got to have radar on your dash in the business, you cannot do this flying blind.. yes he does negotiate with brokers frequently, you have to know how to play the game and the old time trucker talk does not cut it. You know, the junk you here sitting on the stools at the TA .

Well many of you are already doing well with your system in here, but,,,stay off those stools, they will drag you down.

You might want to ask Phil what they were making for non-reefer freight. I'm thinking it was around 2.00. That coupled with LEAM's 33% makes 3.00. WG would probably get around the same.

IMO, every carrier does clamor for it. By the time it gets to the contractor, it's a pittance of what it was. It's not impossible. I've gotten over 3.00 before to go to Canada, on a regular basis, when the freight was regular.
