Miles

I'm thinking a load that pays a good rate per mile, covers your daily cost, but takes many log book hrs to complete.

Ex: high value load
400 miles, $2.50 per mile.
Loads Fri, delivers Monday.

If you log securing it for 60 hrs that has to be figured into the rate.
We've logged 70 hrs so we need x number of $$.
There will be securement fee, but does it cover the 60 hrs lost ?

Phil, say you were still at Fed.

I'm on a secure load and you park next to me.

I may say "Phil, my books a little tight, I know you don't load til day after tomorrow. Would you guard my load while I take a much needed break ?"

Sitting in your seat, looking at my truck shouldn't be a high paying job. Your time, lost log book hours, is worth much more.

If I took an 8 hr break, while you secured my load, you in effect have sold me 8 hrs of time.

Actually, had we made the trade, I would have sold you my truck-guarding services at an agreed-upon price. It is not the time that is sold but the services.

Absolutely, you want to focus on things like revenue per day/week or if you have to hold the load over the weekend but that doesn't have anything to do with how many miles per shift you guys run.

We've detoured a little to Phil's comment #3 in post 46 that in expediting that pay per hour is irrelevant.

A person's time is a commodity that can be bought and sold. In my case, I have FAR less time available to me than I did at 25. THEREFOR, since my time is a rare, and getting more rare with each passing minute, it is worth FAR more than it used to be. At the rate it's going, it will not be long before no one will be able to afford me. That is when I become priceless!

You're already priceless my friend! :D

I bought enough time to maybe log another load that week ?

By buying my truck-guarding services, you relieved yourself of the obligation to provide them yourself. That enabled you to go off duty and preserve your log book hours for later use. But you did not buy time, you bought truck-guarding services. If I was to bill you on paper, it would not be for time, it would be for services rendered.

Time is often gained by people who purchase services. When I pay a man to mow our lawn, I gain time to watch a football game. I do not gain that time by buying time from him. I gain time by paying him to mow the lawn.

Yes, but it is an interesting discussion just the same. An Expedite Now article is coming to mind on this topic. The title would be "How Much Do You Make and How Do You Know?"

I've invested all the time that I'm going to in this discussion.

It has been interesting.

As far as average time per shift.
After leaving the customer we wanted 500 miles driven until morning.
I drove to the 7.5 hr mark. My wife will drive the balance so neither of us loses time taking a 30 minute break.
Time not lost ? Misappropriated ? Wasted ?

Now most people on here won't know the song but I've got Anthrax stuck in my mind!
