Parts of SE Michigan are affected by the Toledo water problems. There are a few areas that buy their water from the Toledo system. Our area is included in that water use ban since the "south county" water system buys it's water from Toledo. No word when the water will be safe to use again

Of course, we would likely not be having this problem if we had not drained so much of our wetlands. Ohio is VERY bad in that regard, they have lost in excess of 90% of their wetlands. The government is not helping since they do almost nothing of value when it comes to wetlands conservation.

Here is an example of what COULD be done. It works

Man-made wetlands turn wastewater into tap water

Toledo water has been declared safe to use again. Any bets that NOTHING is done to restore wet lands or curb unnecessary fertilizer use. Eliminating biofuel production would help so would putting in buffer strips on farms. NO fertilizers should be used for ANYTHING other than food production in the entire Great Lakes watershed. That won't happen. Canada will do nothing either.

As in the US, MOST of the work on wetlands is being done by Ducks Unlimited and other private conservation groups. Canada's record in this regard is as bad as ours.

unfortunately it takes something like Walkerton to wake some up....

in Hamilton 1 year the city had out grown its water runoff drains....it rained so bad it backed up into the sewer system sending millions of gallons of RAW sewage into L Ontario......they built 2 huge holding tanks I can't recall the capacity millions of gallons at both ends of the city to hold some of the run off that can be released at a later time....and that has never happened again....

We know how to fix these problems, but as per normal, government is in charge and it does nothing of value. As long as we have government as we do now, nothing will change.
