I think the best you will find will be a group rate - which still has significant savings.

The company we are with gave us info on some discount or group rate insurance. There were a few that sounded good so I called for info and found out they either didnt want to approve my husband as a smoker or myself because of other preexisting health issues.

My husband had left employment as a company driver where we had insurance so we elected to continue his coverage under COBRA. The price is actually a little lower to do this than BCBS or another comparable plan. We can keep our coverage for 2 yrs this way.

Since then I have learned that after our COBRA ends there is a law that says we cant be refused coverage due to preexisting condition, etc, when seeking health insurance as long as we have that certificate of coverage from COBRA (stating we have exhausted all our coverage thru them).

A word of coution, have a plan way before COBRA runs out, I also have the pre-existing condition issue. I applied for the BC/BS of NC coverage I was not turned down................ BUT the cost was 2750.00 per month for my wife and myself. (that is with 80% co-pay and a 4000.00 family deductable) Thats 33,000.00 per year
I O/O a van. Round numbers..... give or take.... that is my entire income. Sure would be nice to have a reasonable soulution to this problem. I've asked several carrires to sell me coverage with a 10,000.00 deductable to keep premimums down. They don't sell that kind of coverage.

You might want to check with OOIDA,they have various plans including a catastrophe policy that ,while it has a 5,000 deductible the premiums aren't too bad.
