Hello,

I would be glad to hear from anyone who has an opinion (good or bad) on this type of engine. My questions are not year-specific. Does this engine require high maintenance? emission or fuel system? What type of fuel mileage does this engine get? or should it get? What kind of mileage before re-build? (if anyone has had a re-build, what did it cost you)? Again, I am not asking for a specific year, I am happy 2 hear about anyone's experience with this type of engine. I am new to this site. I am a former 18 wheeler owner/operator. I preferred a red-top Cummins N14 in my trucks. I am currently driving a Sprinter Van. Thanks very much.

654k before rebuild. Some have had 900k....one friend at 450k.

Our cost was $22,303.84.....and 47 days.

When it runs well, excellent fuel economy. Prone to exhaust manifold leaks, and design of exhaust pipe leaving turbo brake sucks. Turbos, egr valves, egr coolers most expensive.....but they shouldn't be. We're semi-content, but it may be the last Daimler product we buy.

I have a pre egr motor 425k same problems turbo connection to exhaust is weak and that short 18" pipe and clamp are uber $$$ exhaust manifold studs are a real problem I've had many replaced at big labor cost parts were cheap though also not find of the air clutch for the fan (that instead was a long thread (search for it).

I have had several cats with no problems as long as you do all the maintance requirements the book says. Guess I may over due it on maint. But didn't have any problems. Got a friend who bought a truck that sit over a year with a cat he has issues but he don't do regular maint. Just what it says on oil changes like some other people I know do. No wonder they have repair bills all the time. Just saying.

Glad you brought that up. For a second, I almost thought this thread was about Mercedes engines.
