I found out the van needs about $4,500 worth of repairs. Currently I'm getting new seals for the engine and the rear end completely rebuilt. Also needs wheel bearings and a speed sensor.

That is a lot of repairs. My van needs an oil pump, rear main seals, a gasket pan seal, some new oil cooler lines, a new front seat, and a new windshield. The only silver lining in all of this is the fact that I just sold it and I don't have to drop anymore cash on the thing. The van is worse than a girlfriend. You'll end up spending all of your money on it and be like what did I ever get out of it? lol. Good luck with all of those repairs.

Yup and then having a driver that drove home empty every weekend, and a few loads that paid .74 cents per mile to the truck. The industry doesn't even pay enough money to keep the van in good condition. You shouldn't have to know a cheap mechanic, or be able to do the repairs on the truck in your own backyard. This business should pay enough money to roll the truck into a good shop once every couple of months and say "fix everything that needs to be fixed!" Why do we run our equipment so cheap? Fuel is up, food is up, the cost of tires is up, the average price of a van is up, and we continue to run for less money than we did 10 years ago. Why? I don't even see how fleet drivers in vans are making any money.

After I had to wire my driver 50 dollars because he didn't have anything to eat one weekend I relized that I was trying to squeeze blood from a turnip. I felt so bad for the guy I decided to pull the plug on my fleet operation. There just isn't anything there. Now to get back to being undercapitalized for a break down!

It takes a couple of years before that major repair/breakdown event catchs you with your pants down; and if you've been running your equipment on the cheap, you're going to either have to borrow money, or you'll be forced right out the bizz. I can already see the handwriting on the wall. I'm pulling the plug before I lose another dime. I am however going to put quite a bit of money away just in case I ever decide to get back into this in a newer van. But if my medical situation doesn't improve soon I'm just going to scrap expediting once and for all. Good luck out there.

I am so glad you have seen the light...aka truth finally....we've been beating you on the head for years and you kept insisting .85 was acceptable...

Sorry to hear your calling it quits Jeremy...

Well I can't run a cargo van business in Michigan living here in California. It's just a matter of logistics and the fact that my van is getting too old to put it on with the bigger companies. Inusurance rates are higher, rates per mile are down, and I'm gearing up for a long drawn out battle with social security for a disability claim. I live my life in a lot of pain now, wolfing down pain killers, and just trying to stave off anxiety every time my lung has a sharp pain in it. I can't over-do things like I used to. Driving 2 days on 5-6 hours of sleep with little stretching outside the van would probably cause me to get another clot again. Plus getting into an accident while on blood thinners would pretty much end things for me.

I can wish all I want to, but that is not going to bring my body back to what it was two years ago. I'd have to explain to every shipper and receiver why I can barely bend down as they watch me struggle to strap down and unstrap down freight. As much as people can pretend to understand, sending a driver that limps around his van actually makes the carrier look unprofessional. Plus I can't give up the pain killers. I can't function in my day to day life without them and the blood thinners make me kind of zoned out. So I just have to accept the way things will be from now on. I could clot up again at anytime and just pass away. I'm going to try and reduce the amount of day to day stress that I have in my life and adjust myself accordingly. Any how I hope you guys can weather the strorm and continue to thrive out there on the road.
