. . . It's shocking that such shoddy standards were enough to put someone on Death Row, absolutely. And while standards have improved, human nature hasn't: build a better mousetrap, etc. Law enforcement [including politically ambitious prosecutors and judges] can still cause injustices to happen, and as long as they can, the justice system shouldn't be allowed to put qnyone to death.
Of course, I think convicted prisoners should be made to earn their keep, [and work extra for whatever 'extras' they wish to enjoy, like TV, library books, etc].
Which is what I've been saying for years.

We need to end this inhumane practice once and for all!

Once I read the article, the evidence on the gun was -[ forgive me], the smoking gun, [dammit!]:banghead:
The timecard doesn't really prove he was at work, but the gun proves he didn't shoot the victim. ].
They couldn't rule out that the gun could have been used in the crimes.

Not now - they can't rule anything in or out, now, due to deterioration, maybe? Missing evidence? the bullets/fragments from the scene] - but an expert 16 years ago said the bullets found at the crime scene didn't come from that gun.
No word on the prosecutor who said they did.....:(

They no longer have the test bullets from the gun from thirty years ago-missing evidence. The crime scene bullets were mutilated, according to the D.A. who didn't prosecute the case again.
The deterioration could have possibly occurred in the barrel of the gun. It was an old gun to begin with. Fifty years old. 38 S&W revolver back in 1985. The defense forensic witness said at the time that the barrel had corrosion. How much more corrosion did the gun acquire over the past 10-30 yrs? Could have played a role in inconclusive tests as well.
