Major rockslide in I-40 gorge 3 mm NC

The Enemy

Piper, thanks for the video feed. Two summers ago i was heading east thru the gorge coming up on the TN/NC line, past the line went into a sweeping left hand turn, coming out of that turn, there was a guy in the middle of the road, his pickup in the left lane directing traffic to slow down and take the right shoulder. As he was pointing towards the shoulder a boulder probably 3 foot in diameter fell off the mountain side, bounced off the concrete median and landed in the left lane. It was just a small rock slide. It was right after the state line, probably about the 2-3 mile marker.

The state trooper said that there was no witness .
there for the truck hit it when it was all said & done .
driving too fast for road condition .
wonder if they will charge the trucker with a preventable accident.
i hope not .

looks like laundry day is delayed in the Carolina...

A month for that?

Oh some one needs to get it together and get some of that stimulus money to get the road open in a week.

Greg, why don't you fly down and show them how to clear up the slide in a week. Moving the debris will be the easy part. Stablizing the mountain is another thing that the DOT will
have to address. In addition to all of your other attributes, are you also a geologist and/or
an engineer?

Wow. Just came through that gorge two Saturdays ago. Amazing. I guess those puny little fences they put up wouldn't hold back something like that!

Those little wire fences and mesh wire contraptions probably aren't very effective. I suppose they are installed more for aesthetic value and a futile attempt to "do something." When a vertical rock wall, or cliff, decides to give way... gravity wins.

The delay isn't a rumor - it's a fact. I-40 won't be cleared until probably Feb. 2010. I believe it was mentioned in an earlier thread, but the best alt. route is I-26 that connects through Asheville, NC and Erwin, TN to I-81.
