for those not familiar with the word it is pronounced macknaw.

the island is the place to be. the city is the departure point. every hotel chain is there spoiling the view of the harbor. smaller shops and homes are on the north side.

here is a local b&b

Nice photos Jack!

We were heading south over the bridge a few months ago and had to do a chinese fire drill out in the middle (wife was driving and got sick). Fortunately didn't hold traffic up too bad. When I stepped down out of the passenger side you could see right down through the metal grate----talk about yer vertigo!

Thanks for sharing the pics.

Jack, I believe it's pronounced Mack-i-naw.

You haven't lived until you've ridden a motorcycle over the grate.

Nice thing about that blue truck is you can change the plugs and the fan belt from inside and not get wet in the rain. Crane loading as well, real nice!

The picture on my signature line was taken at Straits State Park in St Ignace MI. That's on the north end of the bridge and the bridge is in the background. I get there and further north as often as possible. There is something special about the U.P. for me. I NEED to go there. ....Oh, and yes I have crossed the bridge on a motorcycle. It's kinda high up and real windy. When I got to the other side I realized that the only way back was back over that bridge. From now on I'll cross it in an enclosed vehicle with four or more wheels.

You could have went all the way around, through Chicago land!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd rather ride a motorcycle on a high wire than ride it through Chicago. I could have gone through Canada too but I lived in Charlevoix at the time and either option would have added tons of miles to the trip.

I live about a hour from the bridge and I was driving from my favorite fishing hole and came across this 4x5 elk standing on the road. Unfortunately I only had my cell to take a picture. but this is why I love it up here, Bear, Deer, Elk Turkey, Eagles, Fox, Coyote, we see them all the time by the house

Don't know if it's just an urban legend, but they say a Yugo was blown off the bridge, driver and all.

I drove the grated lane once on my motorcycle--and I looked down--it's like flying.

Still haven't made it out to the island. You live in a place and never see the site in your backyard.

It's true about the Yugo. The only accidental death in a car on the bridge. There was another one but it was a suicide. A guy drove off in a Bronco in the winter and hit the ice. Broke a hole in the ice which at the time was over a foot thick.

Two vehicles have fallen off the bridge.

* Leslie Anne Plouhar died in 1989 when her 1987 Yugo plunged over the 36 inches (91 cm) high railing. A combination of high winds and excessive speed was blamed.
* In March 1997, a 1996 Ford Bronco went over the edge. It was later determined to be a suicide by driver Richard Alan Daraban.

I've ridden the bridge on my bike a few times. It's a nice ride!

Mike,

Do you have a guess to how far north I have to travel before I can find pasties? I ask people in the southern part of the state, and they have no idea what I'm talking about. I guess I'm looking for the pastie demarcation line.

Well, I would say you could find some in Mackinac City (just below the bridge).. In Traverse City there is a couple of places that have them but they are not good.. They put gravy in them (yuck) which makes them Pot Pies. Real Pasties come from the UP.

By the way, pasties are the ONLY thing you should put Ketchup on.

Pasties---just can't get good ones around here. My Grandma was from overto Wakefield and made da best ones. She used Rutabagas instead of potatoes and usually mixed in venison and ground pork sausage.

Definitely no gravy---gotta have the catsup though.

Jack,

You really need to have one from some old Finish Grandma. You will change your mind. Pot pies are ok, but can not be compared to a proper pastie :)

My Grandma (who is 90 years old now) still makes them like they did for the miners in da UP 100 years ago. No potatoes and no Gravy!

Pasties were the original "hot pockets" but are WAY BETTER Then that.

Now I'm hungry :(

We buy Pasties 10 at a time from "Bessies" in St Ignace. They freeze well and are as close to the real thing as you can buy. Can't go to the U.P. without stopping at Bessies for some fresh pasties and 10 to go. .........MMMMMMMMMMMMMgood.
