Looking into Expediting

I am currently running for local delivery. They have cut pay & routes. I can not afford to do this anymore. I have a full size 1 ton cargo van. It is just an open van inside (no seperator from front to the back). I hope someone could tell me what to do to it to be ready to expedite.

Thanks!

Scott,
I'd say the proper forum for your question would be "Ask the recruiter", because there's no sense doing anything to your van, if you don't know whether any carrier is taking on vans, or whether they would accept yours, if they are. You'd probably do best to check with the many carriers who advertise here, and if you find a possible match, they'll tell you what they require. Good luck to you, hope it works out.

My thought after running a van last year and just know going into a straight truck is - get rid of the van.
There is too may of them out there and most of them can sit for days on days.
Whereas, I have been going anywhere from 3-4000 miles per week in my straight truck and have ONLY sat still when I decided to take a day off.
(Sundays - I need some NFL football, so I try not to run till much later in the day)

Scott:

Good advice from two experienced expediters above. With the current expediting environment for vans being in a static mode, this is not a great time to bring a van into this business. Many of us with years of expedite experience are managing to cope with the slowdown in van usage, but many new owner/operators are finding it difficult to obtain the knowledge and experience to make ends meet.

Straight trucks seem to be the "bread and butter" vehicles for all of the major expedite companies, such as those that advertise on this site. With an acceptable background and truck you would likely be a good candidate for the carrier of your choice.

You asked: "I hope someone could tell me what to do to it to be ready to expedite."

First, you should read as much of the posts on this site that you need to understand the peculiarities of nationwide or regional expediteing. Second, you should consider attending an Expedite Workshop when it comes to a city near you (see schedule on home page)
Third, if and when you are determined to join our ranks, my advice is to sell your van and use the money for a down payment on a small straight truck.

Thanks for all the info. I've been reading the forums and Straight Truck is the way to go. Problem is I owe to much on my van to get anthing on trade.

Thanks, Scott

God Bless
