I am not surprised....with the required upkeep and repair costs for a Sprinter....putting in a driver well at least to me is a loss/break even proposition at the end of a 4 year vehicle...

It is a pain everywhere but it is somewhat of a needed thing in this business. But unfortunately one of the easiest licenses to get, it is too easy as far as I am concern.
When I had my little fleet, I would not even consider someone without a CDL because it shows at least they attempted to understand the laws and rules.
If you were with E-1, and it is a no brainer, the you can get a van with a simple loan and be on your way.
Guido bought one from Ryder, and seems to like it. I looked, there are a lot of bargains, even a few sprinters that look good.
moose 4 years is approx 500,000 miles.....IF you've gone almost problem free I estimate that major repairs are on the way after that point....in my opinion unless you have deep pockets it MAYBE prudent to consider trading up....
In my case I've decided to go with factory drive train replacement when the time comes...as I've taken good care of this one and done all the PM and stuck to the list as Turtle would say....
and this one is Paid in Full....

unlike you, I've had a real good sprinter...pick of the litter I guess....It owes me nothing at this point...knock on wood...

Just wondering, what "is a pain" about it? I'm from Michigan so I don't know what's involved in Ohio.
if you try to get a CDL c in ohio, you cannot get it unless you get a passenger endorsement, or a Hazmat endorsement...So instead of it being a simple written test, you have to spend all kinds of money and time just to get a CDL C.....Crappy I say...LOL

It's no different here in NJ, I went to the motor vehicle agency here, got the manual they provide and studied it front to back, cover to cover. Took the written and driving test and passed both with flying colors! I have my CDL B with pass endorsement and Hazmat endorcement as well! My out of pocket cost-ZERO! (I did have to pay for the phyiscal for the medical card but my insurance picked up most of that)
IMHO, a CDL may make you more attractive on the job hunt and could be the deciding factor whether an employer hires you or not, so I would defintely reconsider obtaining the CDL.
