locking fuel caps

If you have them where did you get them and what was the cost for the pair of them? For vans, feel free to join in but please be sure to identify you are talking about vans so nobody thinks they've found the deal of the century on a pair of truck caps.

I made a rookie mistake once and left my fuel cap on the fuel island. Had to replace. I picked one up at Peterbilt of Shrevport since it was a Pete and I couldn't find one any where else. 120 bucks for one. Not a good bargain I didn't have a lot of choices.

Mine are both on those chains and it's a good thing. I could leave my head sitting on the table if it was removable. My team checked on them at the dealer and with tax the locking caps would have been about $270. It seems awfully high so I'm hoping for a lead to more reasonably priced caps.

Leo;

Always keep in mind that if you are leased onto a for-hire carrier that purchases of parts that are attached to the truck (and any service performed to your vehicle) are sales tax exempt in Ohio. I know it does not sound like much, but many purchases over the course of one year affect your bottom line. Many of the carriers are not aware or do not care to share their knowledge of the exemption.

Hope this helps many.

Thanks,

Turtle, that's a great link. Thank you. How stupid of me to think caps would all be the same since someone must be making the tanks and then sending them to KW, FL or whoever. Now all I have to do is figure out which one fits or maybe go with one of those anti-siphon devices. Thanks again.

I'm really thinking more of the anti siphon device on the theory it would stop most and the few it wouldn't stop probably wouldn't be stopped by a locking cap either.

We had to order our fuel caps from Freightliner and have not received them yet. The cost was 100.00 each but we figure if we can keep from losing one tank of fuel they will have paid for themselves. We are worried about the hassle of unlocking them every time we fuel, also the salt and the lock freezing problem. We sure hope they are worth the hassle and the cost. We park on the back row most often for ease of taking Molly for a walk and that seems like the perfect place for someone to steal all of our fuel.

They just arrested a guy at home who drove his pickup and trailer to stations and parked above the storage tanks. While he went in and fooled around with sodas and chips or whatever his accomplice opened a trap door and put a hose down to siphon off fuel. They got 1000 gal at one and 400 gal at another, all diesel.

We purchased ours at the Kenworth dealership for just over $200.00. Rather than taking our chances with cheaper no name caps we went with Kenworth locking caps.

Considering today's average diesel price of 3.979/gal and the fact that we usaully keep our tanks full (300 gal), that's a cheap investment to protect $1193.00 of liquid gold!!!

Be sure and carry de-icer as all locking caps can freeze up in the winter and you wont be able to get the key in without de-icing them first. Say NO to diesel thefts, LOCK em!

I had locking fuel caps once,bought them thru freightliner,but one snowy night,when I needed to fuel up,do to salt and junk they put on roads,i couldnt get these caps off,well to make a long stor short,had caps cut off,no more locking caps for me.Besides,if they are going to steal your fuel,they are not going to cyphin it thru the top,Sure some of these guys have pumps that can suck it out,but most will just cut your fuel line and let it drain to a container,faster and easier

Somehow I just can't see someone trying to steal your fuel by cutting the fuel lines under the truck.What a messy job that would be. And if they wanted any big quantity at all it would mean crawling under there several times,and just getting completely soaked in diesel not to mention the puddle going everywhere and alerting other people as to what's going on.JMO.DD.

DD theft doesnt happen where people might be watching,and if you put a fuel can under the cut line,your not actually going under the truck,line is in front of fuel tank,and after his fuel receptacle is full,he doesnt much care what is left on the ground
