Load Or No Load

Yes it's time once again to play Load Or No Load. My cargo van and I were dispatched to a small LTL terminal to pick up 1 piece at 1390 pounds. The freight turned out to be one crate, note the weight and demensions written on the crate. There was no ramp to get a forklift down to ground level. Would you attempt to load this crate into a cargo van from a dock high position of 50 - 52 inches?

3) 8 ft long 4x4's and a 2 wheeled handtruck.....now the key word was "attempt"...and then there is the fact that I don't have 3 4x4s in my van nor a hand truck....:D

If the shipper is willing..I've used the sling method....2 straps around the box middle and end and thru the forks....lowers it over the side and swing the box in as far as possible.....remove middle strap leaving the rear sling on the box, lift a bit and slide in the rest....2 man job....I've done it....a longer forked lift works best....

The now defunct Kitty Hawk Cargo had an agent in Tampa that used fork extenders that lowered the fork toes by about 28 inches. One a load like that, we would pull forward, let them lower the crate, and then with doors wide open, back in around the lowered crate and let them set it down. We would then pull forward before they retracted their forks.

However, this crate looked as if it could not be end loaded. True?

Does it matter if you're Liberal or Conservative? :p

A liberal would get 10 Pedros to do it...in your case it would be 10 boat people from Markham....*LOL*

A conservative would have it on and be away...before a liberal would even start the thought process....*LOL*

Looks to be closed ends...I'd put a 2x2 or 2x4 under that end for the delivery side....where it would take probably 2 lift trucks to get it out...1 to drag it out so far and 1 come from the side...

Moot,
You know you should just pull the van up to the dock, have them slide it on the top of the van and strap it on tight. It will be fine that way.

I had one like that . What they did is push it off the dock just a little till the nose of the pallet was off. Then tilted it and the nose fell into the van. Then pushed the rest off into the van except for maybe a foot until the pallet jack almost fell off the dock with the forks hanging off the entire dock hanging in the air. They had to get a forklift to lift the pallet jack out of the way and a couple guys came out and finished pushing it in the van. No damage to the van or crate. But it was lighter at around 900lbs if I remember right. Really no easy way to load it.

But I keep my canoe on the roof racks. Wouldn't want to leave that behind, especially with the spring melt.

All you guy's and your expertise?? Get a running start with the lift on the end, park the Van 3 foot from the dock with the doors open.

Please check the brakes on the lift.

That's a tough one. I would consider the cost of any damage to the van and who would pay for it. Another factor would be if it was a great paying load, going in the direction I want to head to.

Also factor in damage to the freight. The shipper was an LTL carrier and agreed to load me but only after signing the B.O.L. and relieving them of any responsibility for damage to my van and/or the freight. I never saw the freight bill. The consignee was an energy company involved in wind farms. The freight was probably something expensive.

I estimated I would need to be about 3' from the dock to accommodate the height of the crate and angle.

I have load 8' crates containing steel rods, but they were in the 400-500 pound range and I carried a 3" diameter steel pipe to use as a roller.

Wind farms? That's the second time I've heard that today. Was it going to Utah?
