Living in a Politically Correct World.

I'm having trouble living in the world today. Everywhere, I see proclamations to be proud of who you are, to stand tall and shout "Here I am!"

I've been trying to find something I'm allowed to be proud of, yet every time I try to share, someone says I'm wrong to be proud of that.

If I say proud to be born American... then I have a narrow world view, and hate immigrants.

Proud to be Christian? .... Intolerant of other religions
Proud to be Straight?.... Homophobic
Proud to be White?..... Racist
Proud to be Male? ..... Discriminating against women
Proud to be Married? ... Insensitive to singles
Proud to be Dad and Grandpa?.... Insensitive to childless

WHAT AM I ALLOWED TO BE PROUD OF?

If it calms you at all please know that you could light yourself on fire (proudly of course) and it wouldn't matter to me. I'm more concerned about what's for lunch today.

If anything all this PC'ness is having a negative effect and inflaming situations

Yup, Ive come to realize I am a minority... straight, white, Christian male. Oh, and if you add in married to same woman for 23 years.... wow! Kids grew up with both of us? Uh oh....

Being limitedly sensitive is one thing, but boxing yourself in by trying to conform is another.

Unless your career depends on you being multicultural sensitive, be proud and don't worry what others think.

It is a good point and a GREAT post! Inflaming is not the only problem. The biggest problem, IMHO, is one that puts us all in danger and that is the pc-ness that doesn't allow profiling at our airports as Israel does. PC that the left uses to poo-poo the real dangers that we face from within is another example.

I don't see it as a "how I live" question. No one likes to be looked upon as being racist, intolerant, etc. You cannot go through this life without interacting with others and it would seem that more and more, you cannot converse about anything without these accusations coming up.

All of this pales in comparison to what I wrote above about the safety of our society as a whole. It's inexusable, IMHO, when people's lives are at stake because of someone's, anyone's political ideology.
