Lift Gates

If I was to buy a new D unit, would a lift gate get me enough extra work to justify the cost? Some companies say maybe and other say they are a waste.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Go easy I'm a newb!!;)

It depends on the company. Some pay more just for usage. Some pay more to the truck for every mile because it's on there. You'll have to talk to the companies you are interested in to make a determination.

With Landstar Express America I usually get $150 additional for use of liftgate. During the last 6 months 90% of my runs included liftgate. Now the previous 3 months I only had need for it 10% of runs.

If I was getting another truck it would also be a used one with liftgate and generator.

Good Luck!

One thing to consider when contemplating a lift gate is the possible negative that comes with a lift gate. If you lose something off it you are looking at a cargo claim or even worse you or others might get hurt. If you get hurt the next words you will hear is "Call us when you are back in service". Know your limitations and load or unload accordingly.

This is one option to go overboard on with large dimensions and weight capacity. For years I had a relatively small Maxon tuck away Lift Gate that contributed to changing the color of my hair from black to grey.

We have never regretted the day we bought our lift gate. We bought a large lift gate with several safety features. The lift gate gives us a little edge often on getting a load offer over others sitting around.

We paid a small fortune for our lift gate and plan to move it to our next truck. I would not suggest to anyone to go into debt to buy a lift gate. If you cant pay cash for it wait until you can and buy a good one. No sense sweating every load worrying about how the gate will perform. We have had freight on our lift gate that we could not even guess the value of but we have don't worry because of the way our gate is set up.

We are also though like everyone else sometimes we can go a few months without using it and then we just about wear the gate and us out with several back to back loads. You just never know.

We have an inner lift lift gate. It is the elevator style as we where 40' in total length so the lift gate had to go completly under the truck.
