License/Experience Requirements

My wife and I are strongly considering expediting in the future. With regards to license and experience, I have a Class B (since March '04). I actually have 20 years experience in this class truck as a firefighter (up to 40 ft. length and 65,000 GVW under emergency conditions in all types of weather and road conditions.) I was never required to get my Class B, as firefighting vehicles and their drivers are exempt from the requirement in our state. My wife would be a new licensee, with no experience. With the age, clean MVR, no DUI's and everything else aside, what would our chances be with the major carriers?

BanditMan,
No problem with most of the major carriers. If you have recently gotten your class b and your wife is in the process, getting into the straight truck or cargo van side of expediting would not be a problem. Make sure you also get hazmat added to you cdl's, most of the larger companies like owner op's to have it. If you haven't gotten info on expediting yet, make sure you start that process by going online or speaking to a recruiter.

Have fun with the business,

BanditMan;
I would suggest checking with the potential carriers on your list. Many hiring requirements are driven by the carrier's insurance company. Insurance companies will generally require at least 1 year experience in the type of vehicle you intend to operate, some have as much as two years. I would like to think that your years driving a firetruck would surely fit the bill. Your wife may need additonal experience or training.
You will find a carrier that will accept your experience and I'm sure you and your wife will enjoy expediting.
Good luck.
